AUGUST 22, 2024

Note from Wesleyann, MLA 2024 Annual Conference Chair

Greetings! I’m Wesleyann Johnson, Director of the Center Line Public Library and the 2024 Conference Chair of MLA’s Annual Conference. It’s been an immense privilege to helm a workgroup of our amazing colleagues from across the state of Michigan in planning “Press Play”, to be held this October 16-18 at the Grand Traverse Resort in Acme. There is also a Small & Strategic Libraries Pre‑Conference on October 15, at the same location.

Our vision for the 2024 Annual Conference came to life after hearing of its location, greater Traverse City, which, for many of us, isn’t just a location but a “destination”. MLA events are meetings of minds, first and foremost, but we wanted the 2024 Annual Conference to offer an escape as well. This is reflected in the roster of events: from the Tuesday evening pre‑conference events (a wine/brewery tour, the tour of the State Hospital and a murder mystery party), the opening keynote speech from award‑winning magician Ben Whiting, the “See You in the Funny Pages” library comic contest with the acclaimed artist Gene Ambaum, the reception at the Traverse Area District Library, our fun “jam sessions” for bouncing ideas and so much more! When we play, we learn. Our objective is to have attendees “press play” and enjoy themselves, while developing professionally. Read more

Let’s Go! October is Michigan Library Appreciation Month

Get ready to celebrate Michigan Library Appreciation Month! This October, we are excited to honor Michigan libraries and library staff, emphasizing the theme of “Let’s Go!” Libraries inspire us to go explore, go learn, and go connect with our communities.

Join us in celebrating Michigan Library Appreciation Month and help us showcase the profound impact libraries have on the lives of Michiganders. Libraries and their dedicated staff play a crucial role in fostering connections, providing resources, and supporting lifelong learning.

We invite libraries, library staff, and patrons to get involved in various activities throughout the month. This October, we encourage you to submit the Michigan Library Appreciation Month proclamation to your local elected officials to secure their support. Issuing a proclamation can take some time, so start early by identifying a council member, mayor, or supervisor to sponsor it. Contact information can be found on your local city, county, or township website.

Stay tuned for social media ideas, newsletter copy, graphics, and more resources to help you participate in the celebration. Let’s go to the library, engage with our communities, and highlight the invaluable contributions of Michigan libraries, librarians, and library workers all month long! Let’s Go! Download the proclamation here.

MLA Celebrates 133 Year Anniversary

On September 1, MLA will celebrate 133 years of serving the Michigan library community!

MLA is Michigan’s oldest and largest library association spanning more than a century. It has influenced the course of Michigan’s libraries since its inception in 1891, after Mary A. Eddy, the librarian at Coldwater Free Public Library, wrote to Henry M. Utley of the Detroit Public Library about organizing a state library association.

Show your pride in being a part of MLA by sharing a message on social media and tagging MLA on Sunday, September 1! Send a happy birthday message, share how long your library has been around, or give us a shout-out and let us know how long you have been a member!

On August 15, Governor Gretchen Whitmer announced two appointments to the Library of Michigan Board of Trustees.

Dr. Mia Murphy, of Lansing, is a chief policy officer at Michigan Association of State Universities. She has previously been a senior analyst in the State of Michigan Budget Office and a chairperson of the Associated Students of Michigan State University. Melissa Lambert, of Allen Park, is school library media specialist at Allen Park High School. Lambert received a Bachelor of Arts in history, geography, social studies, secondary education from Michigan State University, and a Master of library and information science from Dominican University. Melissa Lambert is appointed to represent K-12 school librarians for a term commencing August 15, 2024, and expiring October 1, 2026. Lambert succeeds Nancy Hmayed whose term has expired.

Justice for All Commission Seeks Library Representation

The Justice for All Commission currently has an open seat for appointment of an individual on behalf of the Michigan libraries as a stakeholder group.

When created by the Michigan Supreme Court, the Commission designated a seat for a member of the library community given the role libraries often play in assisting individuals with addressing their civil legal issues. The Commission itself meets quarterly but any active workgroups typically will meet 1x per month. The goal of the Commission is to close the civil justice gap primarily through system improvements and increasing access to legal resources/information. The posting closes on September 6, 2024.

Closing Keynote with Kelly Jensen: The Past, Present, and Future of Book Bans

We are excited to announce that Kelly Jensen, author and editor at BookRiot.com is joining us on Friday, October 18 as our closing keynote speaker!

Book banning is baked into American tradition, coming and going in waves as it is politically advantageous. Now nearly four years into the current wave, what are some of the trends and shifts in the types of books being targeted? What tactics are being used not only nationally but right here in Michigan and why? While the impact of book bans is predominantly negative, this era in librarianship has also provided several positives.

This keynote will offer insights into trends in book banning, discuss the mental health ramifications of book bans, and leave attendees feeling not only prepared to continue protecting the right to read but feel supported and encouraged in their unique roles as defenders of democracy. Learn more about our featured speaker lineup.
