Mike Morris grew up in Trevose, attending Assumption BVM School, Archbishop Wood High School, and trade school during high school. With a busy, combined work and academic schedule, sports and extra-curricular activities were at a minimum, although Mike played baseball through 9th grade.

With thirteen-plus years under his belt in the employ of another electrical contractor, and having learned his trade very well, Mike set up his own company in 2007, and went full-time in 2009. Allwire Electric works in both Pennsylvania and New Jersey, and handles clients from single family home owners to Toll Brothers and Dunkin’ Donuts.

Mike’s motivation for going out on his own was simple, and one we’ve heard before from business owners: “I didn’t want to rely on a company to employ me. I wanted to build my schedule around my children,” who now have joined him in his business.

Insofar as his business growth and change has occurred, Mike says, ‘If the job makes sense, we’ll do it. If it has a wire, we can handle it.’ This all-encompassing ‘wire’ based approach means that as markets change, Allwire Electric can jump into new segments and tap new opportunities: student housing, apartments, home theater, security, solar, and generators are some examples.

“My biggest challenge as a business owner has been building good teams. I’m fortunate to have that in place, now.’ Achieving a balance between residential and commercial is important, too. The bottom line, in Mike’s opinion, is ‘what’s going to benefit my company?’

“My biggest satisfaction is that my daughter is an electrician, and is part of my business. I am leaving a legacy for my children.’

The expectations he has a business owner compared with being an employee are many. “In addition to getting the work done, I have to think about things like holiday parties, performance reviews, salary reviews, etc. I need to make sure my business is one where my employees WANT to come to work.”

To the person just starting out in business, Mike advises: “stay on top of everything in the office. Know what your margins are. Don’t get overwhelmed.’

Mike is a solid customer of Edible Arrangements – Willow Grove. ‘The arrangements are great,’ he says; ‘I order them for employees,’ who appreciate them.

Mike and Allwire Electric are members of LeTip of Bux-Mont and the Bergen County (NJ) Chamber of Commerce.
