SUMMER UPDATES FROM THE TEAM

OUR TEAM

Our MEES team turned an inward eye to our organization these past several months, working to create a more cohesive, diverse, and skilled team to help chart the course for MEES to help grow, adapt, support, and strengthen the impact of environmental education and educators in Massachusetts. We met regularly as a team, supported by consultants and peers, to identify and strategize on MEES critical needs that include an assessment of internal communication, board structure and roles, board recruitment, organizational bylaws. During a fun and productive evening retreat, we agreed as a team to a set of shared values to help guide our work moving forward. This "Phase 1" of our strategic planning process was supported with ee360 funding - a partnership program led by the North American Association for Environmental Education (NAAEE) in cooperation the US EPA and eight partner organizations that seeks to create a workforce of environmental educators who are well prepared and positioned to increase environmental literacy across the continent.

OUR STRUCTURE

As a result of this internal strategizing, MEES is reinvesting in our organizational team structure to help secure a successful future. We established a new Board Governance team and Fundraising team, as well as a reinvestment in a Conference/Program team and Strategic Action team. In addition, we are committed to maintaining our part-time staff position.

OUR FUTURE

With our teams and staff in place, and additional support from the NAAEE Capacity-Building Fund, the Grassroots Fund, and anonymous donors, MEES is able to step in to our most important work - developing a strategic plan that is aligned with the needs of YOU - our community! We will invite your participation over the coming months to update/develop a shared mission and vision for the longer-term future of MEES, identify the needs of our community, develop strategies to meet those needs, and create a plan for implementation. Stay tuned for details!

SHOW EE THE MONEY

Much of the collective work and success of EE relies on grant support from funders, peer organizations, and the vision of individuals. In an effort to better support our eeCOMMUNITY, MEES is developing an eeGRANT opportunities resource page. Some funding is deadline-driven and other opportunities are on a rolling basis. Check out our new page on the web - and if you have a funding opportunity or success story please reach out and SHARE!

eeCURRICULUM INSPIRATION

As the scope of education on behalf of the environment expands beyond the classroom walls, so too does the need for new, inspired, and updated curriculum and resources. To help lighten the load of educators, MEES continue to seek out and share eeRESOURCES relevant to traditional and emerging trends in environmental eduation. Below are a few examples of regional and national organizations with helpful resources - from climate change to food and agriculture to local ecosystem.

About The Massachusetts Environmental Education Society

The Massachusetts Environmental Education Society (MEES) is dedicated to the promotion, preservation, and improvement of environmental education across the state. The organization was established in 1977 by Chuck Roth – a biology teacher and passionate naturalist – nationally acclaimed as the “father of environmental literacy.” Our diverse membership includes all environmental organizations or individuals that are educating on behalf of the environment. MEES is comprised of a volunteer Board of Directors that meets monthly to plan the annual conference, manage communications, and work to bring information and programs to the EE community. MEES serves as an affiliate member of the North American Association for Environmental Education.
