MAINE HIGHLIGHTS
"Every day that I see patients I hear those stories and the profound impact on their lives. It is lifesaving work - it's just extraordinary. To share that work and joy with those patients and be an active part of something so meaningful is so enriching to my practice and to my life."
FACULTY'S CORNER

Hello colleagues!

These two articles were presented at this April’s American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM) national meeting as top Addiction Medicine articles of the year. As the public health emergency has now ended and treatment programs are untangling what this means for workflows, I thought it would be useful to take a look. It wasn’t until I dove into the details that I realized I’d inserted unwarranted assumptions about what the findings implied.
There are two related articles here, but I’ve focused on the one with the mortality benefit.
It raises questions that perhaps will get you thinking…I wish I could hear those thoughts!

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
The PCPlus new MaineCare primary care model transitions away from a volume-based payment system toward an approach that provides Population-Based Payments tied to cost- and quality-related outcomes. As part of this model, PCPlus providers are required to have a documented process to routinely perform Screening, Brief Intervention, and Referral to Treatment (SBIRT) for members. When do I need to have this implemented, and are there resources to help with the implementation and training?
Starting July 2023, a documented SBIRT process is required. Luckily the ME SUD LC has a variety of SBIRT resources on its website and will provide your practice training. Please put in a request through the website.

Personal Recovery Story

Lisa Silverman

Lisa Silverman finds lasting healing through holistic practices and shows others the eclectic path recovery can take.

With her unique sense of style and radiant personality, Lisa Silverman has been a brilliant force in Maine’s recovery community for over three decades.

It’s hard to imagine there was a time when she was isolated and self-contained.

However, in 1989, life seemed bleak to her. The only person in the world who knew she had a problem with drinking was her boyfriend. She was young and frequently drank to blackout. He was much older, a drug dealer, and caught up in the relentless machine of addiction
