County Races to Find New Elevator Operator

Negotiations between Mountaire and Anne Arundel County to operate a shuttered grain elevator vital to Southern Maryland farmers ended last month, and the county is rushing to find a new operator in time for the fall harvest, a county official said last week. Read the full press release here.


Let NHTSA Here Your Voice

The National Highway Transportation Safety Administration (NHTSA) has taken one-way towards an electric vehicle future. Its new proposal would require an industry fleet-wide average of approximately 58 miles per gallon for cars and light duty trucks by model year 2032. The rule would also require a 10 percent increase in fuel efficiency for heavy-duty trucks and vans year over year.

2023 to 2024 On-Farm Trials

University of Maryland's Agronomy Program is looking for volunteers to participate in our on-farm trials for Fall 2023 and Spring 2024. The On-Farm Trials Coordinator will assist with all aspects of implementing the protocols and compensation will be provided. Find the protocols and sign-up online here.


Maryland Nutrient Management Farmer Training & Certification

If you are interested in writing your own Nutrient Management Plan the fall course will be September 25th to October 23rd. Registration closes on September 18th and the cost for the course is a $20 exam fee. The course is online. Learn more here or register here.


Splitting Nitrogen Found to Increase Yields in Corn

Splitting nitrogen across multiple applications has been found to increase yield, regardless of most other differences in nutrient management practices. This study is in its third year and is seeking acres for the fourth and final year of research in 2024. "We're not increasing the rate of fertilizer in this practice. Maryland Soybean Board Encourages Consumers to "Ask A Farmer'

The Maryland Soybean Board has embarked on a new campaign encouraging consumers to "ask a farmer" through a series of television commercials. The series of commercials, each featuring a Maryland soybean grower, explain how farmers are using pesticides, genetically modified organisms (GMOs), conservation practices, and producing various bio-based products to benefit both consumers and the environment.
