Wheat and Barley Yield Trials Results for 2022-2023

This year was unusual for wheat and barley production in our region and we have seen unprecedented yields both in our trials as well as in farmers' fields. We did not see detrimental effects of wheat diseases this year in MD, we documented some leaf rust but it appeared too late to affect the crop yields. Results can be found online here.

MDA & Nutrient Management

On July 17th, the Maryland Department of Agriculture announced that they will continue to work with the University of Maryland to write nutrient management plans for farmers. There is a three-year agreement to be signed to continue the funding of the plan writers which will be managed by the Extension program. MDA is currently accepting nominations for farmers and industry professionals interested in participating in the task force. Nominations are due by August 9th, learn more here.

EPA Releases Draft Strategy to Better Protect Endangered Species from Herbicide Use


EPA released the draft Herbicide Strategy for public comment, a major milestone in the Agency's work to protect federally endangered and threatened (listed) species from conventional agriculture herbicides. Read the full press release online here.

Jacobs' Worked Celebrated at Classic


Delegate Jay Jacobs received the Dr. James R. Miller Award from the Maryland Grain Producers Association during the annual Maryland Commodity Classic. "Delegate Jacobs demonstrated leadership and ability to work across the aisle on important issues have elevated him to ranking minority members on the Environmental and Transportation Committee. Moore Unveils Two New Environmental Initiatives


The new task force is being assembled as Maryland and six other Chesapeake Bay watershed jurisdictions to meet federal pollution reduction goals for the Bay. Moore described the effort as a novel approach that places a greater emphasis on science and data. Read more online here.

Palmer Amaranth Hitch-hiking?


Dorchester County farmer was scouting fields and was surprised to reach the back of one field where a dense patch of palmer amaranth had grown where corn had been planted. It is believed that the weed seed entered the field where deer corn was brought by hunters as bait for the animals. Read more here.
