MDA Details NM Plan Agreement with UMD

The Maryland Department of Agriculture released this month an agreement detailing its renewed partnership with the University of Maryland to manage Nutrient Management plan writing across the state. The agreement pays for more than 20 advisors, and the Extension currently has nine vacancies. The agreement also required Extension to provide nutrient management educational programs outlined in the article here.

Groups Call on NHTSA to Rethink Proposed CAFE Standards

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's proposed new fuel economy standards "greatly missed the intent" of the Corporate Average Fuel Economy program to enhance energy security, according to technical comments filed by the NCGA, RFA, and NFU. Read more online here.

Grain Elevator Reopens in Lothian, MD

A former Perdue Farms elevator in central Maryland is reopening under county ownership. The elevator in Lothian is coming back online, just in time for the fall harvest, after Warfield Brothers signed a letter of intent with Anne Arundel County in late September. Read more here.


Tar Spot Confirmed Across Multiple Counties in MD and DE

Over the past month, tar spot has been confirmed in Maryland and Delaware for the 2023 growing season. In early September, reports first came from Cecil and Harford counties which also had confirmed tar spot in 2022. Later it was confirmed in more counties. Tar spot is favored by cooler temperatures and extended leaf wetness. Fields that are at maturity with tar spot just being observed should not experience yield losses, but this will now be a disease to monitor for in future seasons. More here.

With $1.1 Million, UMD Study Unwelcome Crop: Nitrogen


A $1.1 million NASA grant will examine various conservation practices meant to reduce nitrogen emissions related to agriculture. Using satellite data, the scientists will identify "hot spots" above farmlands and natural areas that have elevated levels of ammonia and nitrogen oxides in the atmosphere. Read more online here.
