The Mortenson Center in Engineering for Developing Communities (MCEDC) combines classroom work, research and development, and real world, on-the-ground experience to train engineers to work in partnership with organizations in developing communities worldwide. Our goal is to create sustainable and appropriate solutions to meet people's basic needs.

EDC is Hiring!
We are pleased to announce that we are hiring a full-time (9 month academic year) instructor position. The instructor will participate in course development and assessment, teaching, faculty governance, and university service with a primary focus on new courses for the professional master's track. More details available on the

. Review of applications began April 1, 2017 and will continue until the position is filled.

2017 Practicum Placements
Placements are being finalized for 24 students in the following areas:
- 12 Water/Sanitation
- 6 Construction/General Engineering
- 3 Relief/Humanitarian Assistance
- 2 Air Quality
- 1 Sustainable Agriculture
Expected Locations including Cambodia, Côte d'Ivoire, Ecuador, Ethiopia, Ghana, India, Indonesia, Kenya, Malawi, Mozambique, Nicaragua, Philippines, Switzerland, Tanzania, Thailand, Uganda, USA, and Zambia.

Mortenson Fellowships Awarded for Spring 2017

NSF Graduate Research Fellowships
Congratulations to EDC student Shaye Palagi for earning a 2017 NSF Graduate Research Fellowship, and to James Harper and Eric Peterson who earned honorable mentions in the competition. Shaye was one of 2,000 fellowship recipients nationwide this year and joins a growing growing list of EDC students and alumni who have earned these prestigious awards.

EDC Alumni selected for AAAS Fellowships
We would like to congratulate Ryan Mahoney (MS 2012) and Greg Rulifson (PhD 2015) on being chosen as AAAS Science and Technology Fellows; fellows serve yearlong assignments in the federal government and learn first-hand about policy-making while contributing their knowledge and analytical skills. Since graduating, Ryan has worked as a researcher on the Gates Reinvent the Toilet Challenge here at CU Boulder and for Innovations for Poverty Action in Kenya. Dr. Rulifson is currently a member of the teaching faculty in the Humanitarian Engineering Program at Colorado School of Mines.
Congratulations are also in order for Alia Khan (PhD 2016) on being chosen as a AAAS Energy, Environment and Agriculture Fellow. Dr. Khan is a Post-doctoral Research Associate with the National Snow and Ice Data Center on the CU Boulder campus, continuing the work she started during her dissertation.

External Advisory Board
Our Advisory Board met March 16th to focus on our program's excellence and expansion. Our advisers will spend the next several months strategizing with the leadership team on how to ensure that the MCEDC is globally recognized as the leading center for educating and training development engineers, and researching developing community issues.

Successful 2017 WASH Symposium
The 5th Annual Colorado WASH Symposium, was held March 7-8, 2017, and
brought together nearly 300 academics, practitioners, students, and community members to discuss relevant topics in water, sanitation, and hygiene. 25 speakers and 15 student research posters and presentations discussed emerging technologies and approaches, behavior change and the social dimensions of WASH, challenging contexts, and public health. We'd like to congratulate the student planning committee on another fantastic symposium! Also check out their Twitter feed @coloradoWASH.

USAID Initiative Kicks-off!
The Sustainable WASH Systems Initiative celebrated a successful kick-off meeting with representatives from all of the partner agencies March 5-11, 2017. Partners include
USAID/Water Office, CU Boulder, Environmental Incentives, IRC, UNICEF, WaterSHED, Whave, Tetra Tech, LINC. They will be working in
Uganda, Ethiopia, Cambodia and Kenya.

EDC Seminar Series, Spring 2017
This spring semester we hosted three speakers who represented varied contexts and scales of development.
In February, we hosted Beth Osnes to lead a discussion on the role of theater for empowering women's participation in development. Osnes is an associate professor and director o
f graduate studies in theater at CU. Read more about her works on her department website page.

In March, we hosted a joint talk along with EWB-USA CU's chapter with Paul Namphy, the
Municipal Coordinator for Haiti's National Directorate for Drinking Water and Sanitation (left), and Arumugam Kalimuthu, the Director of the WASH Institute Program in New Delhi (right). Namphy and Kalimuthu answered student questions on development and gaining employment in the sector.
