Vision: To dramatically improve the health and wellness of our communities in Southeast Michigan and Northwest Ohio by being a premier society of healthcare leaders.
President's Message

Michael Nanzer, FACHE, DPT, MBA

MCACHE President

Happy 2024!

It is a great honor to have the opportunity to write this as the President of MCACHE. I want to start by thanking and recognizing the leadership of Angela DeLaere over the past year. Angela has provided invaluable service to MCACHE and has left some enormous shoes to fill. For me, serving as MCACHE President falls under the category of things I never considered I would have an opportunity to experience. My goal is to continue the great work Angela’s leadership team has done and continue the great efforts of our association.

MCACHE has given so much to me and has been an invaluable resource in my career. For my term as President, I want to accomplish the following:

  • Ensure that MCACHE creates many opportunities to embrace and elevate our current and future members.
  • Create value for individuals looking to become the effective leaders of tomorrow, those moving into leadership for the first time, or those experienced leaders who just want to become a better leader.

My focus this year is on membership and to drive the value, importance, and benefits of membership.

Having seen a sneak preview of some of the planned projects for this year. I am extremely confident that we will serve our membership well. MCACHE will:

  • Continue efforts to engage physician leaders.
  • The Emerging Leaders are planning another wonderful Summit.
  • MCACHE is refocusing efforts to engage students through connections and career development.
  • Provide amazing programs and opportunities for networking.

One of MCACHE’s strengths this year is having superior committee leadership. To get the most value out of your membership consider joining a committee to connect with others and assist with the powerful work that happens in the chapter. Here is the link to join a committee.

I am looking forward to all the superb activities that will occur this year.

Regent's Message

Kira Carter-Robertson, FACHE, MHA

Regent for Michigan and Northwest Ohio

In the spirit of the new year, I am sure if you are like me, you have listed out several new year’s resolutions that you want to achieve. It may be to lose weight, buy a home, or go back to school. A resolution is simply a firm decision to do or not do something. No matter what it is, my challenge to you is to be intentional. Learning to be intentional means choosing to act on the things that are important to you. Here are four things you can do to help you be more intentional:

1.   Set Clear Goals - Setting goals gives you a plan and path to work towards each day. It helps you start your day with focus and purpose. Goals serve as a road map and give you the motivation and focus to achieve your priorities in life.

2.   Set Clear Metrics of Success - Aligning your vision with measurable goals ensures you are motivated and focused to act.

3.   Make Each Day Count – What are the key things you need to do to work towards your goals today? When you have greater direction and purpose, you know exactly where to invest your time and attention. Without intentional focus for your day, you can feel stuck, waste time on non-important activities, and get easily distracted.

4.   Set Time for What Matters - To be purposeful with your time, set boundaries around your time, set aside time for self-care, and establish daily routines that support your goals. Starting and ending each day with gratitude will help you protect your time and ensure you end each day feeling proud of what you’ve achieved.

One of my areas of focus for 2024 is setting aside time to focus on my own professional development. Join me in Chicago at the 2024 ACHE Congress on Healthcare Leadership from March 25 – March 28. Congress is a great way to discover new solutions, hear different perspectives in the field, and is a great way to connect and engage with more than 5,000 healthcare professionals.

This year, I am pleased to announce that through the amazing sponsorship of the Michigan Health and Hospital Association, the Great Lakes and Midwest Chapters of ACHE are joining forces to host a Michigan and Northwest Ohio ACHE Mixer during Congress on Tuesday, March 26 from 5:00PM - 7:00PM (Central) at the Radisson Blu Hotel. Please RSVP Here, if you would like to attend.

For those who are unable to make it to Congress, please be sure to check out all the educational clusters and course offerings found on the ACHE Website and check out your local Chapter’s website to see the wonderful line of educational offerings for the year. To reduce barriers to ACHE educational programming for ACHE members experiencing economic hardship, ACHE has established the Tuition Waiver Assistance Program. ACHE makes available a limited number of tuition waivers for specific educational offerings to Members and Fellows whose organizations lack the resources to fund their tuition for educational programs. Members and Fellows in career transition are also encouraged to apply. Tuition waivers are based on financial need. The recipient must be a current ACHE Member or Fellow for at least one year from the time of the education program start date. Student Associates, Faculty Associates and International Associates are not eligible to apply. Please refer to the Tuition Waiver Program found on the ACHE website for specific application due dates for each program.

Paraphrasing a famous quote by Henry Ford, “If you think you can, you can, and if you think you can’t, you can’t…Both perspectives are right”. As we enter the new year let’s have a can-do attitude and be intentional with what we hope to accomplish in 2024.

Improving Healthcare Through AI: Creating a Balance of People & Technology

By: D. Sue Townsel, Corewell Health Children's and Member of the MCACHE Communications Committee

Healthcare organizations across the world are looking at ways technology and AI-artificial intelligence can enhance patient care by reducing variances, improving quality and safety, and addressing the rising costs of healthcare. AI bases its results on algorithms and patterns programmed in the system. So, AI would essentially be able to review and summarize medical history, diagnose a patient and propose a treatment plan. Will the future of healthcare be as simple as plugging in symptoms and receiving a diagnosis and care plan?

According to The Future Healthcare Journal, Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Bajwa, says AI will be able to summarize medical history, signs and symptoms and provide a medical diagnosis. However, today many practices take steps to prevent patients from relying on technology for information regarding their health. Patients can become bombarded with information, recommendations and outdated resources from family, friends, and online searches. Afterall, when patients turn away from their screens and to their providers, the information that they receive is more accurate, and based on their medical history and can improve communication with the medical team and compliance with the patient’s wellness journey.

The future of AI can be likened to the movie, Wizard of Oz. Dorothy and her friends take a long journey to seek help from the great and powerful wizard. They overcome many of life’s challenges, only to be met by a screen reflecting an image of a powerful being with a booming voice. They later discover the new-aged technology of an ordinary Kansas man behind a curtain managing the operation. Dorothy and her friends are disappointed when they learn that this man is not an all-powerful being.

Like Dorothy and her friends, seeking help, patients are searching for quality health care. While screens are leading the future of healthcare, it is imperative that we provide health care solutions for patients with different needs. How can health systems work to ensure accuracy and still offer a level of human connectivity?

“Health systems can integrate advanced technologies for accuracy, like AI diagnostics, while preserving human connectivity through personalized patient interactions, empathetic communication, and involving healthcare professionals in decision-making. Balancing technology and human touch is key for comprehensive and effective healthcare delivery” This was the answer from ChatGPT, a language model designed for natural language understanding by answering questions.

AI is moving quickly but as health systems begin considering ways to integrate technology in everyday practice, leaders should be mindful of the patient’s individualized needs. Patients appreciate personalized interactions, and empathetic communication but they also appreciate convenience of being able to attend medical appointments from the comfort of their living rooms. On the patient’s health and wellness journey, it’s important to ensure providers have the proper training and necessary tools to provide each patient with compassionate and quality care they deserve. Like Dorothy and her friends, no one wants to envision a knowledgeable being, only to be met with a screen that regurgitates medical jargon programmed by an ordinary Kansas man. So, it is important to invest in both the technology and the people.

State of the State Address on Healthcare - December 5, 2023

By: Mike Henry, Lead of Emerging Leaders Professional Development & Networking Committee

On Tuesday, December 5th, 46 emerging leaders joined together in Southfield at the Beaumont Service Center for the final Professional Development and Networking event of the year. The group had the privilege of receiving a “State of the State Address on Healthcare” from Adam Carlson, Senior VP of Advocacy at the Michigan Health & Hospital Association (MHA). MCACHE has maintained a very positive relationship with the MHA and we were honored to have Adam return for his third year in a row of providing the group with an update on both federal and state level healthcare policy.

The evening began with delicious food from CK Mediterranean Grille in Southfield paired with an opportunity to network and make new connections. With 46 people in attendance, this was by far our best turnout in the 6-year history of the event, and it made for a wonderful networking atmosphere!

Adam’s update was very engaging, covering important topics such as nurse staffing ratios, violence against healthcare workers, telehealth access, and behavioral health parity. For the first time ever, we also partnered with the Great Lakes Chapter of ACHE (GLACHE) to live stream the presentation. The live stream went out to various watch parties across the state of Michigan including in Okemos, Grand Rapids, Midland, and even the Upper Peninsula!

Thanks to both Adam and all our wonderful participants who came out for an enjoyable and educational evening with good company – we look forward to seeing you all at our future Professional Development and Networking events in 2024!

MCACHE Volunteer Appreciation Event

By: Erin Johnson, Member of the MCACHE Communication Committee

On Thursday, January 18th, members gathered at Bigalora in Royal Oak to celebrate the hard work, dedication, and time our volunteers put into the incredible programming and collaborations that define MCACHE. While enjoying a delicious slice of pizza and house made pasta, members reflected on the invaluable accomplishments our volunteers achieved over the past year. This upcoming year will undoubtedly see our volunteers continue to find new ways of giving back as Board Members, committee leads, and committee volunteers.

You can always find MACHE members out in the community and within our Chapter making an impact in ways big and small. Just a few highlights include the eight new 2023 podcast episodes, the mock interviews members facilitated for Streetwise Partners mentees, the 85 boxes of clothes and 15 boxes of food and hygiene products that volunteers helped package with Helping Hand for Relief and Development, and the over 84 pounds of litter pollution collected and removed from Belle Isle Park. Such a list can never encapsulate all the indispensable work that our committees and Board Members are doing, but it does go to show that MACHE had an incredible year of service in 2023, with more to come in 2024.

If you are interested in building your healthcare leadership network and contributing to the local community, please fill out the Willingness to Serve Form or email mcache@achemail.net to find out how you can get involved.

We think differently about what is possible. And we empower our patients, team members and partners to do the same. When others say no, we keep questioning. When it seems impossible, we say--keep pushing until it isn't. Because at our core, we believe we can.
