West Penn Hosptial

Radiology Master Plan Phase 3

The Master Plan project is being delivered through a partnership with DesignGroup and HF Lenz utilizing the design-build method. The overall project consists of the total renovation of approximately 35,000 SF of existing Radiology space at West Penn Hospital. The project also consists of a two-story addition on the roof of the Central Sterile Department to allow for the expansion of the Radiology Department as well as future expansion of the O.R. Suite. The 3rd phase of this project included the addition of a 2nd Interventional Radiology (IR) procedure room and expanded its patient holding capabilities by adding eight new holding bays. Phase 3 also added a new storage room that was sized for a new procedure room in the future, if needed. The area adjacent to the new rooms was also fitted out with clean/dirty regulatory rooms, reading rooms for physicians, a consult room, and new bathrooms for both staff and patients.

DesignGroup and MBM have a strong history, partnering on projects like the multi-year, multi-phased West Penn Hospital Radiology Master Plan.

What has your experience been like working with MBM on the WPH Radiology Master Plan and other projects?

I have been fortunate to work with MBM for over 30 years now (I spent many Saturday mornings working on project details with Jerry Turk when I was with my previous firm). At a young age Danny helped me understand a level of trust that not all contractors embrace and Matt has certainly carried that mentality forward. Having this long-term partnership in place lets a complex multi-phase, multi-year project such as the Radiology Master Plan at West Penn Hospital run smoothly and allows for a higher level of confidence so we can troubleshoot issues when they arise.

To date what has been the largest challenge with the WPH Radiology Master Plan project?

It has been a great project to be a part of and certainly a nice learning experience for younger staff. The core team has been consistent throughout. Mark Kinney, Brad Cole and Nick Malaskovitz (WPH Construction Management team) are constantly monitoring the project with their team, our design consultants HF Lenz and Taylor Structural Engineers have been great partners throughout, the Imaging Institute team has been involved from the beginning, and of course MBM (Matt Brown and Mike Debo) has maintained weekly meetings since 2019 to make sure we are always on the same page. It wasn’t without heartburn at times but no real challenges that we haven’t been able to overcome.

What have you learned from the WPH Radiology Master Plan multi-phased planning process?

Without a doubt having the right team in place and maintaining constant coordination makes for a much easier and successful project. DesignGroup wrote an article about this very subject earlier on in the project. Here is a link to the article.
