What do you specialize in, and what are the best circumstances that clients/prospects should come to you for help?
As an Asian art appraiser specializing in antiquities and modern/contemporary pieces, I bring a unique blend of professional expertise, language skills, and lifelong passion to my work. While the field of art appraisal is relatively new to me, my love for Asian art has been a constant throughout my life.
From a young age, I immersed myself in the world of Asian art, eagerly exploring the streets of Hong Kong in search of antiquities. One particularly cherished memory is of acquiring a Qing Dynasty Blanc de Chine piece for my 13th birthday, a treasure I purchased with savings from my lunch money, supplemented by a thoughtful gift from my mother.
Every client’s circumstances are unique and I welcome all, I feel rewarded when I solve their quests. I recently worked on a case where the client inherited Korean works of art and had no knowledge of the properties. I identified a calligraphy by the founding father of modern Korea.
Please describe the most interesting project you have had recently
A client recently brought in a Japanese scroll painting by Yosa Buson, a famous 18th-century poet and painter. The artwork was breathtaking, and the silk mounting had undergone meticulous restoration. What truly ignited the excitement during the appraisal was the discovery process. It encompassed every stage, from the initial research conducted online and in libraries to the anticipation leading up to our appointment at a museum, where we had the privilege of closely examining a collection featuring some of the finest examples of Buson's work.
\Who has influence you most in your approach to your work and your professional goals?
Under the mentorship of Cynthia Shaver, I have gained invaluable insights into the art of appraising. Additionally, PP Classes instructors such as Fran Zeman, Analee McClellan, and Sandra Trooper have equipped me with foundational skills essential to this profession. Furthermore, dealers and associates from museums provided me with diverse learning experiences, each contributing to my expertise in their respective specialized areas
What do you enjoy when you’re not working?
I find great pleasure in exploring museums and galleries, where I can immerse myself in the world of art. Building connections with artists and dealers allows me to gain deeper insights into their creative processes and the stories behind their works.
