Welcome to the May edition of the Oakland Public Library newsletter! Spring has arrived, and with it comes an exciting lineup of events and activities that are sure to delight and inspire. Get ready to mark your calendars, as this month brings the long-awaited performance of the "Ramapo Valley Chamber Ensemble LIVE on the Library Stage. Prepare to be enchanted by their captivating melodies and virtuoso performances, a true highlight for music enthusiasts of all ages.


Additionally, we're thrilled to announce the return of the Oakland Public Library "Cookbook Club!" where culinary aficionados can come together to share recipes, tips, and stories while exploring the delicious world of cooking.


But that's not all... don't miss a mesmerizing performance by classical guitarist Alfredo Festa LIVE on the Library Stage. His skillful mastery of the strings promises an evening of enchanting music and memorable moments.


And for those who yearn for travel adventure... join us as we explore "America's National Treasures: National Parks Unveiled," with Chris McCormack, where we'll delve into the beauty and wonder of these iconic landscapes.


Plus, calling all trivia buffs! Test your knowledge and compete to win prizes at "Teen Trivia - Play & Win!" And as always, don't forget to stop by and get some great reading recommendations from our knowledgeable library staff. There's something for everyone this May at the Oakland Public Library!

An old postman has spent his whole life delivering mail to the mountain of Hunan and is about to retire. His only son is due to take over his duties. As father and son journey through the mountains, the son begins to appreciate the toil and burden his father has to bear as postman for the villagers, and the old postman is also deeply moved as his son relates his mother's anxiety as she waits for him to return home from every trip.

AKC Museum of the Dog


AKC Museum of the Dog is a nonprofit canine museum at 101 Park Avenue in the Murray Hill neighborhood of Manhattan, New York City. The museum features exhibits that include: Dogs in film, dogs of presidents, war dogs, dogs in exploration. The museum features one of the largest collections of dog-related art. OPL has a pass for FREE ADMISSION for 2 Adults & 2 Children per visit.

Ms. Barbara will offer Preschool Story Time on the following Tuesdays in May: May 7th, May 21st, and May 28th at 11:00 am. Oakland children, ages 2 to 5, will be singing along to favorite songs and listening to stories. The Story Time will be held in the Library’s Story Tower. Registration is not required.


Tots Library Club, a program designed for the youngest library users, birth to 2-yrs.-old, and their caregivers, will be held on Thursdays from 10:30 to 11:00 am. Toys (yours or ours) will be available for a brief meet-and-greet from 10:30 to 10:45 am. A short segment of nursery rhymes, fingerplays, and songs will follow. The program will be held in the Library’s Story Tower. Registration is not required.


Terrific Two’s & Three’s! is a story time for two to three-yr.-olds, and their caregivers. Join us on the following Fridays in May: May 17th and May 24th at 11:00 am for stories, songs, and fingerplays. The program will be held in the Library’s Story Tower. Registration is not required.

May Craft Bags (to go) will be available for pick-up beginning Wednesday, May 1st. Oakland children of all ages may come into the Children’s Dept. to pick up a craft bag. One craft bag per child, please.

Ms. Christina and her wonderful “Jiggly Wiggly” music program will be in the Oakland Public Library on Friday, May 3rd AND Friday, May 31st from 11:00 to 11:45 am. The program will be held downstairs in the Library’s Meeting Room. Oakland children, ages 2 & up, and their caregivers, will enjoy music and movement activities. Registration is required for EACH session. Registration is now being taken for the May 3rd session, and begins Wednesday, May 15th for the May 31st session.

Join Ms. Jolie on Tuesday, May 14th from 11:00 to 11:45 am for her fabulous “Move & Groove” music program. Oakland children, ages 2 & up, and their caregivers, are invited to attend. The program will be held downstairs in the Library’s meeting room.
