MASONRY MATTERS

Five Scholarships Awarded at 45th Annual MIM Scholarship Foundation Golf Outing

For 45 years, the MIM Scholarship Foundation has been committed to providing young people with opportunities to pursue careers in the masonry institute. The MIM Scholarship Foundation (MIMSF), which awarded its first scholarship in 1977, was created to provide annual scholarships to Michigan college students currently enrolled in architecture, civil/construction engineering and construction management.

In the early years (1977-2000), the MIMSF's scholarship funds were earmarked for Lawrence Technological University (LTU) student architects. In 2001, the MIMSF's board of trustees expanded its initial commitment to include three other accredited colleges of architecture in the state. These include the University of Detroit Mercy, University of Michigan and Andrews University. Shortly thereafter, the program grew further to include engineering students and construction management students. Today, the MIMSF offers scholarships valued at $4,000 for one academic year!

To help ensure continued financial support for years to come, the MIMSF established an annual golf outing. This year's outing, held on June 23, was a phenomenal success with approximately 100 golfers participating. In addition to the many direct scholarship contributions and hole sponsors, we had tremendous support from corporate sponsors including DuPont, FERO Corporation, MASONPRO, Wire-Bond and York Flashings. This year's MIMSF scholarship honorees include J.R. Snyder, Robert F. Ebeling, John A. Heslip, George Spencer, Louis Scheich, Sr., Michael Navetta, David McGrath, Karl H. Greimel, Daniel S. Zechmeister, Edgar Boettcher, Jr., the Baiardi Family, Don Leidal and Gino Del Pup.

Five $4,000 scholarships were awarded this year. Recipients include Giovanni Agazzi, Ferris State University (Daniel S. Zechmeister Scholarship); Mario Chiesa, Lawrence Technological University (Gino Del Pup Scholarship); Grace Zalubas, University of

Michigan (Baiardi Family Scholarship); Justin Trout, Eastern Michigan University (J.R. Snyder Scholarship); and Lydia Irving, Lawrence Technological University (Louis Scheich, Sr. Scholarship). The masonry industry, through the MIMSF, has awarded more than

200 scholarships since the inception of the first annual J.R. Snyder Scholarship in December 1976.

From the Desk of Phil Ledent

It was great to spend time with those who support us at the 45th Annual MIMSF Scholarship Golf Outing. In addition to all of our sponsors, I would like to extend a huge THANK YOU to the MIMSF Committee, including Dan Zechmeister, Jim Gendron, Jerry Snyder, Bill Barker, Melissa Kline, Doug Barron, and the MASONPRO team of Melissa, Monica, Don, Tony and Jeff. Their effort is what makes this event a success year after year. Without them, the outing would be as pitiful as my golf game.

As we look ahead to opportunities through CMU Checkoff, I am encouraged that one of our vision's key components is university education and research. I see our investment in this as paramount to the continued success of the masonry industry. Looking beyond scholarships, we have a tremendous opportunity to insert masonry into core curriculums for tomorrow's architects and engineers to ensure that efficiently designed masonry structures are built for years to come.

On the Road Again

June was a busy month for our Executive Director Phil Ledent. To begin with, the MIM, in partnership with Clarkston Construction Tech, led students from Clarkston (Michigan) High School through a course in masonry, complete with a hands-on exercise where the students helped lay brick on a demonstration house on the school's campus. The program was made possible through the support of Albaugh Masonry Stone and Tile, Fendt Builder’s Supply, the International Masonry Institute and BAC Local 2.

Phil then headed to Westwind Construction in Traverse City, Michigan, to assist in identifying options for using loadbearing masonry in a major project. This was followed by a meeting in St. Louis, Missouri, where, as part of an NCMA (National Concrete Masonry Association) Foundation grant, the group took preliminary steps in forming a national masonry design and help center for architects and engineers.

Phil wrapped up the month with a tour at cohost VanderWall Brothers' block plant in Spring Lake, Michigan, for the architecture, engineering and planning firm Hooker DeJong. The tour included demonstrations on how concrete masonry units are manufactured. Participants also got to try their hand at laying block, brick and adhered stone veneer alongside Burggrabe Masonry.

If you would like Phil to present a workshop or training for your team, please reach out.

Building Better Communities

Even though school is out and classrooms have gone

silent for the summer, big things are happening in the

West Ottawa School District in Holland, Michigan. For the West Ottawa Performing Arts Center (PAC), work on a new building is in high gear. This PAC, the second in the district, will be connected to the West Ottawa High School North Campus.

While the community recently celebrated with a groundbreaking ceremony, the work began almost a year ago when JK Masonry Inc. first engaged the design team and owner to ensure that loadbearing masonry was used on the project in lieu of other construction materials. JK Masonry enlisted the MIM and its executive director, Phil Ledent, to help identify alternative materials. Soon after, the Michigan Masonry Coalition and Scott Walkowicz of Walkowicz Consulting Engineers stepped up and began working with the design team, GMB Architecture + Engineering, to provide design assistance. The project has been a team effort with many MIM members, in addition to JK Masonry, Walkowicz and GMB AE, working together to make this a tremendous success for the masonry industry. Other MIM members involved include MASONPRO, Dailey Engineering, Inc., St. Marys Cement and Michigan Certified Concrete. Go team!

The PAC is expected to be finished in time for the beginning of the 2023-24 school year.

The Mason Contractors Association of America (MCAA) advocates for the masonry industry and part of that mission is dispelling mistruths about the masonry industry at large. What are the myths? Check them out here.

The volunteer Checkoff Transition Advisory Council (CTAC) has named Ray McVeigh interim CEO for the Concrete Masonry Products Board (CMPB), the oversight organization of CMU Checkoff.

STRUCTURE Magazine recently reported on resilient military housing, highlighting a $60 million multi-story Bachelor Enlisted Quarters (BEQ) for enlisted military personnel. The article highlights the use of concrete masonry in this project which enabled the design team to meet their goals.

Engineering News-Record reports on a potentially easy way to curb embodied carbon. Amid the active and sometimes complex drive to reduce carbon emissions, the construction industry should also avail itself of simpler solutions, writes Ron Klemencic, CEO of engineering firm Magnusson Klemencic.

According to the Southeast Masonry Concrete Association (SMCA), the recent price volatility and availability of construction materials have people considering the advantages of concrete masonry in their designs as a cost-effective alternative. In addition to the structural benefits, recent independent studies conducted in Dallas and Atlanta found that load-bearing masonry wall systems were less expensive than other alternatives like conventional wood framing, light gauge steel framing, and ICF walls and precast planks. Tip of the Month

Masonry has long been known as a fire-resistive building product. But did you know that a hollow eight-inch CMU wall can achieve a two-hour fire-resistance rating, while a hollow 12-inch CMU wall can achieve a three or four-hour fire-resistance rating? Learn more here.
