The American Herbal Pharmacopoeia® (AHP) is pleased to announce the release of the Monograph and Therapeutic Compendium for Yerba Santa Leaves & Tops (Eriodictyon californicum) and Related Species. This monograph was made possible by collaborating with researchers at the Department of Conservation and Research Santa Barbara Botanic Garden Natural Products Utilization Research Unit Agricultural Research Service United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), the National Center for Natural Products Research at the University of Mississippi, the University of Vienna, CAMAG of Switzerland, and veteran herbal medicine researchers Erin Smith, Christopher Hobbs PhD, and Steven Dentali PhD, among numerous others.

This publication is historic as there has never been a pharmacopoeial monograph written on yerba santa anywhere in the world. Moreover, there has never been as comprehensive a review of the chemistry of the species as that done with the analytical help of USDA, our friends at the University of Mississippi, and Dr. Dentali. Similarly, the Therapeutic Compendium authored by Dr. Hobbs is the most comprehensive review of the botanical’s therapeutic potential written to date. The safety review was coordinated with the most up-to-date review of the literature by the Botanical Safety Handbook team of the American Herbal Products Association (AHPA), while the botany has coincided with researchers involved with a complete taxonomic revision of the genus.

According to AHP President and monograph editor Roy Upton, “Yerba santa is a decidedly North American plant that has a long history of ethnobotanical use by Indigenous peoples where the plant grew, but little attention has been given to its chemistry and pharmacological potential. AHP is grateful to the many dedicated collaborators who made this work possible and to those who provided funding for its development. When we look at the ethnobotanical record, it is clear that yerba santa is deserving of this focused research.”

The Yerba Santa Monograph and Therapeutic Compendium was made possible by the unrestricted contributions of the following sponsors: WishGarden Herbs, Herbs, Etc., Vitality Works, Planetary Herbals, and by AHP Gold and Platinum members Traditional Medicinals, Nature’s Way Brands, Herb Pharm, Natreon, and Europharma USA.

The Yerba Santa Monograph and Therapeutic Compendium (PDF and Print) is available by ordering from the AHP website at https://herbal-ahp.org/#
