WHERE WAS THE LORD ON 9-11?
FIREMAN BECOMES PRIEST!!
September 11, 2001 changed Tom Colucci’s life forever.
He was a captain in the New York Fire Department.
That day, he watched his men die:
dozens of lifeless bodies
as the result of murderous madness,
and the death of their chaplain, Fr. Michael Judge,
as he was giving Last Rites to a fireman.
Where was God that day?
“I saw the worst of humanity that day,
but I also saw the best of humanity that day,” he said.
Tom remembers the hundreds of people
—men, women, and even children—
who came to help:
“They are the body of Christ!
God was definitely with us on that day.”
And so, he decided to become a priest
to continue serving and saving people,
body and soul.

GOSPEL READING REFLECTION
FOR October 3
Twenty-seventh Sunday in Ordinary Time, Year B
********************************************************************************************************
"But from the beginning of creation, God made them male and female.
For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother
and be joined to his wife,
and the two shall become one flesh.
So they are no longer two but one flesh."
- When asked whether marriage is dissoluble, whether a married couple can separate such that their separation ends their marriage, Jesus goes to the very heart of marriage, rooted in God’s original plan.
-
Called the primordial reality of marriage. This origin of marriage sheds light on all aspects of marriage, and it answers the Pharisees' question to Jesus.
- God created human beings as male or female.
- God created male and female as equal and complementary.
- He created our first parents in the married state and for each other in a one-flesh union.
This one-flesh union made by God
is how new human beings come into the world,
within a family.
And one day the child (in the normal course of things)
leaves his father and mother to marry
and he and his female spouse become one flesh, too
- This union is permanent and exclusive - It is life-long (thus, unbreakable) and between those two only.
-
In God’s plan, the family is the normal way that children are brought to be in a right relationship with other human beings and with God. A child can easily accept the kingdom of God when in a family in which father and mother live this one-flesh union of love.
-
A quick clarification: A civil divorce does not mean that a person cannot receive the sacraments, such as the Eucharist at Mass. There are situations when safety requires a divorce or when one spouse cannot prevent it. Note that a person places themselves outside the Church only when someone remarries without being assured that the first marriage was never valid (i.e, annullment - and this has NO effect on children's legitimacy).

ANSWER TO QUIZ
On the right side of St. Peter’s Basilica,
just before the main altar, a small but majestic statue of the first pontiff sits on an elevated throne.
His eyes gaze into the distance;
his bearing is upright and noble; a golden halo rests on his head;
his right hand is raised in blessing. His feet have been worn smooth by the constant touches of countless pilgrims that have
passed through the Basilica over the centuries.
In his left hand, he holds the keys of the Kingdom of Heaven—
the keys that have been passed on in an
unbroken line of succession since the day Christ gave them to him.
But Peter’s left arm is encased in a sling,
as though it were injured or needed support. What a strange detail!
Strange in appearance, but profound in meaning! The sling is a reminder of human weakness. The weight of the keys given to Peter is far too great to be borne by mortal strength; the pope must rely on the Divine aid that Christ promised to His Vicar on earth. It is the Holy Spirit that guides the hand that holds the keys, not any human ability.

A PRAYER TO GOD
O God, we too often try to live in ways that ignore our coming death.
We forget that our days are numbered by You,
that at the end of our days your judgment awaits,
that You are the Lord of our destiny.
Help us to repent daily, and then to live each day
in joyful obedience.
Lead us to live in the light and promise of eternity.
Prepare us to live fully and sacrificially.
