The 2023 MALSCE Convention Was a Great Success

MALSCE leaders are pleased to report that the 2023 MALSCE Convention, which was held on Friday and Saturday, March 3 & 4, at the Boxboro Regency Hotel & Conference Center, was judged to be a great success. The convention attracted 132 registrants, the second-highest number for the last 10 in-person conventions. Feedback from the participants who responded to MALSCE's request for input indicated that the convention was well-received.

A Convention Planning Committee, co-chaired by Tim Armstrong, Western Massachusetts Chapter president, and Ken Conte, MALSCE vice president, and staffed by other Western MA Chapter leaders, was charged with the task of developing and presenting this year's convention. After months of planning, this committee hosted a convention, which was organized under the theme "Inspiring growth in the profession," and featured nine general and concurrent sessions, fourteen exhibitors, MALSCE Annual Meeting & Awards Ceremony, and a reception and auction to benefit the MALSCE Education Trust.

Darren Hardy Named

MALSCE Surveyor of the Year

Darren J. Hardy, PLS, Senior Vice President Survey Services at WSP, was named the recipient of MALSCE's prestigious 2022 Surveyor of the Year Award during the 2023 MALSCE Convention’s Annual Meeting. This award is annually presented to a professional land surveyor who has provided outstanding leadership for the profession.

The MALSCE Awards Committee, which selected the Surveyor of the Year, was chaired by Ian Wisuri, and comprised of fellow past Surveyor of the Year Award winners Paul Tyrell from HDR, Paul Foley from Feldman Geospatial, and Jim Diorio, retired from VHB.

The Committee selected Darren (depicted on the left in the photograph above receiving his Surveyor of the Year citation from MALSCE President Dan Bremser) in appreciation of his outstanding leadership in the profession as a dedicated MALSCE officer. His exemplary efforts led to major accomplishments during his tenure as MALSCE president and past president, including the creation of a Young Surveyors Network and the expansion of professional development programs to include a webinar series and a multi-day certification program. Darren has had a significant impact on MALSCE and its members.

The tradition of selecting a Surveyor of the Year dates back to MALSCE’s early days. It allows the association the opportunity to honor and thank a leader who has been exemplary for his or her service to MALSCE, the profession and the community. You can see the names of the past award recipients on the MALSCE website.

Ed Englander Given

MALSCE Presidential Citation

Edward S. Englander, Esq., of Englander & Chicoine PC was the recipient of a 2023 MALSCE Presidential Citation during this year's annual convention. Presidential citations are awarded annually by the MALSCE president to individuals who they feel have distinguished themselves by their contributions to MALSCE and/or the land surveying profession.

Ed (pictured on the left in the adjacent photograph) received this award for his esteemed career as a lawyer, member of the Massachusetts Board of Registration for Professional Engineers and Land Surveyors, and featured MALSCE presenter. MALSCE members and the practice of land surveying have benefited greatly from his exceptional commitment to sharing his vast knowledge of Massachusetts laws pertaining to surveying and real property including as a lead presenter of the Legal Perspectives on Land Surveying seminar.
