UAV Mapping Educational Series

Thursdays, January 13 & 27, February 10 & 24, and March 10, 2022
8:00 AM - 10:00 AM
Zoom Video Webinar

Presented by:
Raymond J. Hintz, PLS, PhD
Professor, University of Maine

The UAV Mapping Educational Series is comprised of five two-hour webinars that are designed to teach professionals about the concepts behind UAVs, mission planning, data collection, data processing, georeferencing, quality assurance, lidar alternatives, attributing the information, national standards, and products. While directly related to traditional fixed wing large camera format photogrammetry, the use of UAV in producing similar products has dramatic differences due to no pilot on board, smaller format handheld cameras, multi-ray overlaps of photos, self-calibration of cameras, automated pixel matching, and automated classification. The use of airborne GNSS and inertial measuring system (IMU) sensors has changed the traditional georeferencing problem dramatically.

In addition to lectures, the series’ featured sessions will utilize example data and example software, and allow time for questions and answers. Each two-hour session will include a ten-minute break and a quiz to measure participant learning. Registrants who view all five sessions and pass all administered quizzes will receive a certificate of completion. For participant convenience, the first four sessions will be recorded and made available between classes. Participation in the live fifth session is mandatory.

2022 MALSCE Convention
The convention's featured sessions will simultaneously be presented via Zoom
Friday and Saturday, March 18-19, 2022
DoubleTree by Hilton Leominster

Save the date for the 2022 MALSCE Convention on March 18 and 19, 2022 at the DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel in Leominster, MA. The convention will feature in-depth presentations, a convention exhibit, and opportunities to network with your peers. The convention will also feature Joseph V. R. Paiva, PhD, PS, PE who is principal and CEO of GeoLearn, LLC. Joe will be presenting the following sessions:

50 Ways to Improve Your Surveying Measurements
This session covers at least 50 ways that it is possible to make outright blunders, or to include errors that could be important to the measurements you make. Not being aware of them or not considering them can decrease the accuracy of your surveys or make them just plain wrong.

Things About Instrumentation You May Have Forgotten or Never Learned
It is a well-known fact that most surveying team members could use a deeper understanding of how the technology works and the assumptions that are made about its condition at any time. The premise of this session is that by knowing some simple technology checking techniques and a few more things about technology operation, you as a team member can become the first level of quality assurance in your organization’s work.

Re-Engineering Surveyors and Their Businesses
Surveyors often ponder their status as professionals and their relationship to other professionals. During this session, Joe will examine what surveyors do currently and how it affects their self-perception and perceptions by others. He will also discuss how these perceptions are created and what we might do to alter them as individuals, as a group, and as businesses.
