What is counter surfing? Counter surfing is a term that was coined to describe what a dog does when he jumps on the kitchen counter - or dining room table - to steal food. Do you live with a counter surfer? Why do dogs counter surf?

Even though dogs have been domesticated for thousands of years, Vetstreet.com notes that the behavior of scavenging or eating leftover food "is so deeply ingrained that it's second nature ... there is evidence that the earliest dogs were wolves who scavenged from human settlements thousands of years ago."

Even the best-behaved dog may give in to temptation if delectable food is left on the counter. What can you do?

Breed of the month: BOSTON TERRIER

The Boston Terrier, as the name suggests, actually did originate in Boston and was the first American breed to be recognized by the American Kennel Club. But did you also know that:

  • Boston Terriers were originally bred as fighting dogs but have developed into wonderful companion dogs?
  • Their nickname is "the American gentleman" because of the black and white tuxedo-like appearance of their coat?
  • Sergeant Stubby, the most decorated dog of WWI was a Boston Terrier?
  • Helen Keller's canine companion was also a Boston Terrier named Sir Thomas.

Luvk9s will be offering classes at Red Barn Kennels Thursdays in Dawsonville (Big Canoe):

Luvk9s is also excited about offering classes in Ball Ground Fridays at Ball Ground Hounds:
