Luvk9s June monthly newsletter
Summer is almost here - the official start of summer, summer solstice, is June 20th when we will enjoy 14 hours and 23 minutes of sunlight here in Atlanta! This year, more folks than ever will be traveling and vacationing, many with their canine companions in tow. The list of pet-friendly lodging continues to grow. Most La Quinta, Motel 6 and Red Roof Inns allow dogs to stay for free.

A reliable stay is an excellent way to manage an overly excited dog but is also critically important for your dog's safety.

When teaching the stay cue, remember the 4 D's that make up a reliable stay: duration, distance, distractions and delivery of reward. Get a good duration in place before adding distance. Don't add distractions until you've got duration and distance nailed down. Randomly rewarding is the last step.

The same principles apply when teaching a down stay - work on duration first, distance second, distractions third and delivery of rewards last.

Interested in finding a way to exercise your dog that doesn't tire you out? Playing fetch will not only accomplish this goal but will also strengthen your bond with your four-legged-best friend. What a win-win scenario!

Most dogs love chasing balls (or other toys) but many canines don't do a good job of bringing the item back, resulting in games of keep-away or catch-me-if-you-can instead. This can be avoided by using back-chaining to train (or retrain) the retrieve.
