Love the Library
February 2023
What a Year!
Over the last year, your donations to the GLF supported the Goodnow Library’s programs, technology upgrades, and capital purchases, including the Be Bold speaker series, furniture for the Historical Room, museum passes, iPads for the Sara Sherman NOW Lab, Library staff training, the Children’s Room fish tank, a new bench outside of the Children’s Room, the Walling Map restoration, and much more. In addition, the GLF’s Book Nook hosted two in-person book sales and several pop-ups throughout the year, providing additional funding to support the Library’s programming and activities. Thank you for helping to the enrich the lives of all visitors—every donation makes a big impact!

Thank You, Holly, and Welcome, Sarah!
Holly Bernene, director of the Foundation for the last three years, is starting a new chapter. She has been a tireless and skilled advocate for the Goodnow Library and the Goodnow Library Foundation, and we wish her well on her next adventures. Holly’s upbeat spirit, collaboration with library staff, can-do attitude, and ability to tackle the challenges of the pandemic (you may remember the virtual multimedia annual fundraiser early in the pandemic) make her talents nearly impossible to replace. Holly has a special knack for building and maintaining relations within our diverse community via communications, partnerships, and programming (witness the migration of the Be Bold speaker series to virtual and now hybrid format). Fundraising for the Historical Room, which you will be able to enjoy very soon, exceeded expectations. We are grateful for all she has done and look forward to collaborating with Holly in new ways, including having her co-chair the upcoming annual fundraiser in May!

Sarah Olson Liberman, pictured left, is replacing Holly as the GLF director, and she has big shoes to fill! She joins us from the American Mural Project, where she helped oversee the multi-year development and opening of the art museum and education center in Connecticut. Prior to that, she worked with visual and performing arts organizations, as well as on the corporate and agency side in various marketing and communications roles. Sarah has been an active volunteer with the schools and on town initiatives during her thirteen years in Sudbury. She’s an avid reader and has been known to max out the number of allowable checkouts at the Goodnow Library. Already busy working on the annual fundraising event for the GLF’s 15th anniversary (more on that below!), Sarah is excited to jump right in and is looking forward to meeting more Goodnow Library fans. Please stop in and introduce yourself to Sarah in the GLF’s office in the Atkinson Wing of the library (2nd floor).

Historical Room Update
The Historical Room is almost done. New map and file cases have arrived and the process of updating the room’s shelving, storage, and displays will soon be underway with funds designated by the town's Community Preservation Committee. The library looks forward to opening the room for quiet work.
Februllage in the Sara Sherman NOW Lab
Head to the Sara Sherman NOW Lab during open hours in February for "Februllage," a monthlong challenge to make a collage a day, using prompts from the Februllage calendar. Create your own to keep or share what you make in the Free Little Art Gallery outside the library! Check out the schedule of open hours.
Volunteer Spotlight
The Book Nook has some incredible volunteers, including Hannah and Danielle! Discover why they love volunteering:
“I have always been a book lover and strong supporter of the Goodnow Library and had been looking for a way to get involved. When a friend who is a librarian at Goodnow mentioned the new Book Nook and that they could use help, I decided to offer some time. It has been a lot of fun brainstorming new ways to raise money, organize the book sales with an energetic team of volunteers, and give back to a wonderful town resource!”

“I started volunteering in the Book Nook because Hannah told me she enjoyed it and invited me to check it out. After she trained me on my first shift, I was hooked because I loved the challenge! We sort and categorize book donations—it’s almost like solving a puzzle, to figure out where each item belongs. It gives me a sense of accomplishment and I love that we’re recycling books, and that we’re able to sell them at great prices while still earning money for library programs. Hours are completely flexible and the volunteers are a great group of people.”

The Goodnow Library Foundation (GLF) is the only nonprofit organization committed solely to supporting the Goodnow Library’s priorities through fundraising and advocacy, providing an extra margin of excellence. The GLF offers an additional source of support for the Library’s growing needs—such as programs for all ages, technology upgrades, capital improvements, museum passes, and much more—that are not funded by the state or town.
