Military Overhaul Incoming

As a living history museum that is open daily 9am to 5pm, when we want to change our displays around we don't have the option of a closed day to work undisturbed. As such there are days when visitors come by and see us and we might be rearranging things. Were you around to catch our surprise military vehicle overhaul?

On January 25 we completed Phase 1 of a multi-part redesign process of our military vehicles section. We had even more dramatic action on January 30. Check out more photos here of the whole thing: link.

We're still not done with all the work so if you see things a little out of order - or are missing an L-Bird or two - don't worry! We'll be back in fighting form before you know it.

Be on the lookout for additional changes and updates in this area coming soon.

Loving Your Future Ride

Nothing says a gift from the heart like the perfect new-to-you-car for a loved one (or yourself). Share the love by participating in our 2000 BMW Model M Roadster Fundraiser Raffle.

Tickets are 1 for $20 or 6 for $100. Remember - this BMW was donated to WAAAM specifically to raffle so 100% of the funds raised go to the museum. There are only a few months left.

Ticket sales are live here: Link.

Volunteer Open House Feb 18

We've got a busy year planned here at WAAAM and we want your help! Join us February 18 between 10am and 2pm for a Volunteer Open House.

We're looking for Special Event Volunteers (that mainly means car drivers, people greeters, and ride loaders). Come on down to see what we've got cooking up and sign up today.

On The Road Again

Puyallup here we come! WAAAM has once again been invited to have a booth at the 2023 Pacific Northwest Aviation Conference and Trade Show. This regional event gathers all sorts from the aviation crowd - airlines, FBOs, travel bureaus, mechanics shops, technical colleges, and more all gather together for a weekend of fun.

We'll be bringing up some fun to share with you all so stop on by the booth at the Washington State Fairgrounds to say hi. See you February 25 and 26!

School Is for Adults Too!

Don't let the name fool you - our Driving Classes are loads of fun. Get behind the wheel of history.

Learn more about our Model T Driving School and our Driving Through The Decades Class on our website or call to sign up.

The April, May and June Model T Driving School classes are almost sold out so don't delay.

Collect Them All

More and more people are finding themselves (and some awesome merchandise) at the WAAAM gift shop as they purchase gifts for birthdays, friends & grandchildren. Think of us as a shop that's open 7 days a week and carries something for everyone - last minute gift shopping that makes

you look good and supports the museum you care about.

We've stocked up on more of our classic WAAAM Collection Series shirts. These original artwork shirts highlight some of the most unique and treasured pieces in our collection and are the perfect memento of your visit. Some of you may have had the opportunity to ride in the Depot Hack or the "King" Car.

We've got the shirts! We're the OWS (only world source) for these so pick one up or give us a call. As always, we ship to anywhere you are!

New to the shop are these WAAAM caps that join forces with the popular 'Mossy Oak' motif.

Be seen (and unseen) sporting this cap in any urban and/or wilderness setting

of your choice.

Good news! Our ever-popular WAAAM 'Mash' shirt is back in stock.

This not-so-subtle nod to the smash hit series from the '70's has a retro influence that takes you back!

And its buttery-soft feel is the perfect bonus too.

Books still remain one of the best ways to not only lose yourself, but also find a world of knowledge.

By now, you've probably noticed we're a bit obsessed with the learning books offer.

We've found a trio of books that offer varying perspectives on the driving experience and how it's now in the crosshairs as we progress toward the autonomous car becoming the new normal. Each author offers their unique and sometimes opposing perspective on what this means for the future of the beloved automobile. In any case, they will without a doubt drive the point home.

The WAAAM Gift Shop is open daily 9am to 5pm so come on in any time. Members also get a discount and shipping is available.

Restoration & Maintenance Report

AEROPLANES

This past month has been one with a lot of welding. A LOT of welding.

We have finished fabricating the main components of the fuselage for our Nicholas Beazley NB-8.

We started the month finalizing the installation of the plywood leading edge on the NB-8 and then moving the wings to the paint shop for several coats of epoxy varnish. We then switched our efforts to fitting the structural tubes in the fuselage frame before we removed the fuselage from its jig for finish welding clamped to our steel welding table.

With the bulk of the basic frame complete we are now working on building the engine mount and mounting all the wing and landing gear attachment fittings.

On other projects, Volunteer Jim is making good progress on the Hall Scott engine for the Standard J1. Volunteer Martin has finished the Standard J1 stabilizer and is now working on the elevator for that airplane. Volunteer Bret has been plugging away on the Standard J1 fuselage too.

AUTOMOBILES

This month came and went fairly fast in spite of some real wintery weather in the Gorge.

With threatening bad weather, we were fortunate the January Second Saturday car rides almost made it to the 4-hour mark when rain began falling at 1:40 pm. Chris G quickly started to return the 8 cars to their slots inside Museum 3. Our drivers and loading team made short work drying off the rain from each car as they came back inside the Museum. It was a beehive of activity and a great team effort. Way to go Chris G, Melanie S, Craig K, Denny and Sue W, Rich and Linda U, Scott B, Francisco N, Patrick and Rizza M, Tim K, Thomas K, Pete C, Dale L and Judy and Dale N for stepping up and navigating the weather.

Our 1955 Pontiac had a clunk while shifting gears during the event so it went into the garage for diagnosis. It was determined that both U-joints were worn and they were replaced. The car is back to working great now. We also found the horn on our 1941 Lincoln Zephyr was being obstinate during our January Second Saturday event too. Tony A was able to 3D print a steering wheel horn switch base and now it’s working like new.

We are working our way through servicing the Model Ts used in the Driving School classes. While servicing our 1923 Model T Touring Car we found the left rear axle oil seal needed to be replaced to prevent oil contamination of the brake. The 1925 Model T pick up was also serviced.

The 6 DUKW tire rims needed to be wire brushed down to bare metal and the lug nuts cleaned up too. Inside our garage, Dale L, Pete C, Craig K and Tony A undertook the very dirty job. After 4 days of solid effort, the 6 rims are ready to be painted. Once the correct size inner tubes arrive we can mount the new tires.

As we work through the mechanical systems on the DUKW we really want to thank Ray S as he has been very instrumental in locating, buying, and donating new brake parts and axle seals for the vehicle. Chris H has begun to install the new “Hydrovac” (A.K.A. power brake booster) and brake lines so the 14,000 lb beast will safely stop.

Cal C and Don F continue to make good progress on the 1915 Dodge Brothers Panel Truck. If you stop by the museum and see us working on it we always are happy to answer questions on what we are doing.

Rich U has volunteered to establish a Drivers informational card for each vehicle we give rides in. Since there is not a standardization knowing how to start and drive each car, having all the pertinent details available will eliminate mistakes. We've been working on trying to recruit more Special Event Volunteers (which includes things like driving and loading visitors into cars) and are trying to streamline how we do what we do. Want to help? Read about the Open House Day in the second section of the newsletter (above).

We want to thank the following WAAAM Car Guy volunteers who helped this month in restoration, service, and repair, Second Saturday car rides, dusting and cleaning: Andy A, Dick C, Cal C, Craig K, Chris G, Chris H, Dale L, Denny & Sue W, Don B, Don F, Rizza & Patrick M, Francisco N, Judy N, Larry H, Melanie S, Pete C, Ray P, Rich & Linda U, Thomas K, Tim K, Tony A, Scott B, Stephanie H, Jay M-B, Bruce S, and Randy R. Special shout out and thanks to Bonnie W who has convinced not only Dick C out of "retirement" but has also enlisted two new folks Marilyn and Glenn A to help her dust vehicles too. Way to go Bonnie!
