The Lott Carey Baptist Foreign Mission Convention, one of the oldest African American Christian missionary organizations in the United States, celebrated its 126th Annual Session in Greensboro, North Carolina.
The four-day event, which ran from Aug. 14 to 17, drew more than 1,300 participants from across the United States and around the world. It featured worship services, workshops, and presentations from various mission partners around the world.
The theme of the session was “Go”, reflecting the organization’s commitment to “Touching lives with transforming love.”
Mission reports
One of the highlights of the session was the reports from six countries in Africa where Lott Carey has been supporting mission work for decades: Kenya, Ethiopia, South Africa, Zimbabwe, Nigeria, and Liberia.
The reports showcased the diverse and impactful ministries that Lott Carey has been involved in, such as providing shelter and support for abused women and children in South Africa, training and equipping Christian leaders in Zimbabwe, evangelizing and planting churches in Kenya, fighting against HIV/AIDS and providing reproductive health services in Ethiopia, establishing more than 80 churches and supporting six schools in Nigeria, and providing quality education and community service in Liberia.
The reports also highlighted the needs and prayer concerns of each mission partner, such as finances, medical supplies, hygiene products, clothes, shoes, and blankets. There was a need for school supplies, scholarships, staff development, income generating projects, furniture and educational technology, among other requests and needs.
Zimbabwe requested prayer for peace and stability during national elections. Kenya asked that persons pray for the completion of projects, political stability, evangelism efforts, widows’ welfare, and the establishment of a Bible Institute and headquarters. Ethiopia requested prayers for peace, healing, and hope for the HIV-positive people.
Nigeria expressed concerns about security challenges and economic hardship and asked persons to pray for the protection of schools and students from violence and kidnapping, the zeal and safety of ministers and teachers who serve in difficult areas, evangelism in unreached regions, and for persecuted Christians in the north who face discrimination and oppression.
Liberia requested prayers for extension of Bopolu school to senior high level to accommodate more students, resolution of land dispute and a court case that threaten the school’s property, retention of teachers who are often lured by better opportunities elsewhere and increase of financial support and resources to improve the quality of education and service.
Annual Session attendees were moved by the reports and expressed their gratitude and admiration for the mission partners. They also pledged their continued support and prayer for their work.

Rev. Emmett Dunn, Executive Secretary-Treasurer for Lott Carey, delivered a report highlighting new and ongoing initiatives for the coming year.
One of the main goals of Lott Carey is to ensure a sound financial future for its ministry. To achieve this goal, Lott Carey launched a new membership drive called I Am Lott Carey during the 2023 Annual Spring Mission Conference. This initiative offers individuals the opportunity to become supporting partners of Lott Carey through financial and prayer support.
The I Am Lott Carey membership program has different giving levels, ranging from $25 to more than $1,500 per year. Each level comes with benefits such as newsletters, certificates, pins, and invitations to special events.
Rev. Dunn said that the program is a way for everyone to participate in the mission and ministry of Lott Carey. “I trust that you will embrace this as a way that all of us can help fund our calling to Touch Lives with Transforming Love,” he said.
Another important aspect of Lott Carey’s work is to equip pastors and lay leaders to help congregations better recognize their changing social and cultural contexts, clarify values and mission, and cultivate Christian practices that can strengthen their vitality, faithfulness, and effectiveness. To this end, Lott Carey launched the Thriving Congregation initiative in 2022 with a grant from Lilly Endowment.
The Thriving Congregation initiative is a leadership development program that supports congregations to thrive by building their capabilities to discern assets and opportunities, clarify vision and mission, and engage in practices that can empower them to flourish. The program consists of four cohorts of three participants each from different congregations. The participants engagements include both in-person and virtual over a period of 18 months.
Currently, there are 40 participants from 15 congregations of both rural and urban churches from the Mid-Atlantic region: Maryland, the District of Columbia, Virginia, and North Carolina. The first two cohorts will conclude their training in September 2024, and the third and fourth cohorts will commence in the latter part of 2024. Recruitment for the second phase of the program will begin this Fall.
Rev. Dunn said that the Thriving Congregation initiative is designed to help churches adapt to the changing world and serve their communities better.
A call to serve
Lott Carey also continues to find ways to serve its global family through short-term mission trips. These trips provide opportunities for churches in the United States to extend their Christian witness by assisting their brothers and sisters in other countries in their time of need.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Lott Carey had to suspend its short-term mission program for a while. However, now that the situation is improving, Lott Carey is in the process of relaunching its short-term mission program with some modifications. Rev. Dunn said that Lott Carey is following the guidelines from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the World Health Organization (WHO) to ensure the safety of its mission teams and partners.
Currently, Lott Carey’s partners in Jamaica and Puerto Rico are preparing to host teams desirous of serving in these countries. The teams will be involved in various projects such as construction, education, health care, evangelism, and community service. Rev. Dunn said that these trips are not only beneficial for the recipients but also for the participants.
However, not all countries are ready to receive mission teams yet. Rev. Dunn said that Haiti is one of them due to its security situation. He said that Lott Carey remains in prayers with its Haitian family and hopes to resume its mission trips there soon.
Community initiatives
In addition to its ongoing programs, Lott Carey also announced some new initiatives for the future. Some of these initiatives include:
-
Bikes for pastors: This project aims to provide bicycles and motor bikes to pastors, evangelists, and church planters in countries where transportation is a problem. Lott Carey has already provided a few motor bikes to its partners in Liberia and Kenya. Rev. Dunn said that the bikes enable them to travel faster and farther, to visit more people, to share the gospel more effectively, and to serve their communities better.
-
Water/Well Project – Wells for Wellness: This project aims to provide safe drinking water to thousands of people in Kenya, Liberia, and Sierra Leone. Lott Carey committed to building ten wells and supporting water projects in response to requests from its partners. Rev. Dunn said that the wells improve the health and well-being of the people who use them. They also reduce the burden on women and children who have to carry water every day. They also create opportunities for economic development and social cohesion.
- David Emmanuel & Pamela Goatley High School Construction: This project aims to extend Lott Carey’s current junior high school in Bopolu, Gbarpolu County, Liberia to the high school level. The school will be named after Dr. David Emmanuel Goatley and Pamela R. Lightsey Goatley in honor of their many years of service to Lott Carey. Rev. Dunn said that the high school will offer academic, vocational, and technical training to prepare students for higher education and self-sustainability as young entrepreneurs. The high school will also equip students with the essential knowledge and skill set to become productive workers in the workforce and members of their community and society.
- Other community initiatives: Lott Carey is also planning to launch other initiatives such as a youth leadership program, a women’s empowerment program, a disaster relief fund, and a coffee farm expansion project.
Rev. Dunn said that these initiatives are part of Lott Carey’s vision to touch lives with transforming love in every corner of the world.
“We are grateful to have people who are committed and dedicated to the mission of Lott Carey,” he said.

In its 126th Annual Session in Greensboro, NC, from August 14-17, Lott Carey celebrates its ongoing partnerships and new initiatives that have made a positive impact on the lives of thousands of people across the globe. Rev. Emmett Dunn, Executive Secretary-Treasurer for Lott Carey, shared some of the highlights of the mission work in his report.
According to Rev. Dunn, Lott Carey has provided more than $787,000 in mission partner support to various churches and organizations that are engaged in evangelism, education, health care, social justice, and community development.
Lott Carey has also contributed $227,000 in disaster and relief services to Haiti and the United States, where hurricanes, earthquakes, and floods have caused widespread devastation and displacement.
Additionally, Lott Carey has allocated $32,000 for Special Projects that include installing a solar system and a well for Lott Carey Mission School in Liberia, building a church and providing sewing machines in Kenya, and offering hunger relief in Sierra Leone.
The global mission agency has also donated 60 computers to Jamaica and Liberia to enhance the educational opportunities for students and teachers. Through Lott Carey’s Kids Against Hunger program, 200,000 meals have been packaged and sent to Haiti and Liberia to address food insecurity and malnutrition.
Moreover, it distributed 630 pairs of shoes for school-aged children who often walk barefoot or wear worn-out footwear. In Ethiopia, Lott Carey has supported a VCT Mobile Unit housed on the campus of Addis Ababa University for HIV/AIDS testing and counseling.
Lott Carey sponsored scholarships for students who are pursuing higher education or vocational training in various fields. Some of the beneficiaries of these scholarships are studying theology, nursing, education, and social work.
Rev. Dunn also reported on his mission visits to South Africa, Liberia, Kenya, and Jamaica since he assumed his role as Executive Secretary-Treasurer/CEO in November 2019. He expressed his admiration and appreciation for the partners who are making a difference in their communities despite the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic and other socioeconomic factors.
He announced his plans to visit Nigeria, India, Ethiopia, Guyana, Zimbabwe, and Haiti in the near future to strengthen the relationships with the partners and assess their needs and opportunities.
Rev. Dunn concluded his report by appealing to the members of Lott Carey to increase their annual mission support as a way of expressing their gratitude to God and their solidarity with their brothers and sisters around the world. He said that even a small sacrifice can make a big difference in advancing the kingdom of God on earth.

India is a country of contrasts: ancient and modern, rich and poor, diverse and divided. The largest democracy in the world and the powerhouse of South Asia.
It is also a country of immense challenges: poverty, illiteracy, disease, violence, and religious intolerance. In the midst of these challenges, a small but faithful group of Christians has been serving the people of India for more than seven decades: the Lott Carey Baptist Mission in India.
The mission was founded in 1947, the same year India gained its independence from British colonial rule. The mission’s vision was to follow Rev. Lott Carey’s example of preaching, teaching, and healing in India, a country with a predominantly Hindu population and a small Christian minority.
The work has grown from a handful of churches to a network of 12 churches and four prayer groups across the states of Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, and West Bengal. It established four public schools with nearly 10,000 students, seven non-formal education projects and vocational training centers for children and women from marginalized communities, four HIV/AIDS awareness projects and mobile clinics for the poor and uneducated people, and six leprosy clinics that have treated thousands of patients.
Impact is evident in the lives of the people it serves but the mission’s work is not without challenges. The evangelists, pastors, doctors, teachers, staff and students of the mission face danger and opposition from radical Hindu groups who accuse them of converting people by force or inducement.
There are limited resources and funds to meet the growing needs of its ministries and it urgently needs funds for church buildings in Bulandshahr and Sadabad, Uttar Pradesh, where the congregations currently worship in rented halls or under trees. Funds are needed for non-formal education projects and vocational training centers for women, which provide them with skills and opportunities to escape poverty and oppression.
The mission requests prayer for its wellbeing and safety, for the completion and dedication of the church buildings in Bulandshahr and Sadabad, for the success and growth of its non-formal education projects and vocational training centers for women, for the healing and prevention of HIV/AIDS and leprosy among the poor and needy, and for the country of 1.4 billion people, 84 percent living on less than seven dollars per day.
As attendees at Lott Carey's 126h Annual Session in Greensboro, North Carolina learned, the Lott Carey Baptist Mission in India is a testimony of God’s grace and power at work in a challenging context. It is also a legacy of faith and service that honors the memory of Rev. Lott Carey.

A message from Lott Carey President Rev. Dr. Gina M. Stewart
Informative mission education classes
|
The Lott Carey global missional community is excited to announce that it will be holding mission education classes during the 126th Annual Session at Sheraton at Four Seasons in Greensboro, North Carolina, from August 14-17.
The classes will be based on the book, Missional Moves: 15 Tectonic Shifts that Transform Churches, Communities, and the World, by Rob Wegner and Jack Magruder. The book describes 15 paradigm shifts in how gospel-driven Christian leaders are thinking about churches and ministry in today’s world.
The church was never designed to be a fortress for the righteous, but a flood of revolutionaries, bringing the Good News of the Kingdom to broken lives and broken communities in a broken world. Today, millions of Christians are awakening to the holism, or wholeness, of the gospel call, expanding their understanding of church from an institution to a movement.
Recognizing the church’s past missteps and re-envisioning its role in modern society, Missional Moves will fundamentally alter your understanding of the church and how its mission is lived out.
Rob Wegner and Jack Magruder are church founders and Christian thought-leaders who will walk you through three distinct categories of changes that today’s churches have to understand to have the greatest, positive impact in the paradigm shift of our missional imagination, the centralized shift of our local church mission field, and the decentralized shift of the global family of Christ.
If this calling toward movement and transformation is to be realized, it will require some earth-shaking shifts in our concept of the evangelistic mission: “Missional Moves.” This book provides a plan of action for your church that will empower you to unleash each member on a mission, both locally and globally.
Register early for these mission education classes as space is going fast.
