A Good Question

I recently celebrated my birthday, and my PCN and church staff took me out for lunch. It was a fun time together, and traditionally, like in my family, they shared words of encouragement about what they appreciated about the birthday person. It's always a blessing for the one receiving these kind words. So my staff shared, and then, Laura, our PCN admin for the past 25 years, asked me to share what has kept me going in ministry and life (since I keep getting older). Good question... I looked back, which is getting farther and farther away. What has kept me walking through life? I remember starting in marriage, ministry, parenting and, like Solomon, asked God for wisdom. Secondly, I enjoy the book of James, he writes, "Humble yourself," (4:7) so I sought to stay humble. So, the two legs I've been attempting to walk on through life, with God's help, are to stay humble and be wise in all I do.

New LA Church to Join PCN

Atwater Village

Followers of the Way is a small congregation meeting in a rented theater in Atwater Village, a neighborhood in the 13th district of Los Angeles, California. Pastor Nilo Banquerigo (with wife Flor) contacted us this year, interested in membership with PCN. The church just voted unanimously to apply for membership, and we will be presenting their application to our PCN board in August. We are excited to have this new church join us to do ministry together!

Marriage Questions

laughing-beach-couple3.jpg

James Gleason, Church Venture President, up in the great Northwest (one of the regions that make up our National Venture Church Network), recently posted these questions on his Facebook page. These are good questions to ask.

1) What are some things we used to do that you would like to do again? What did you most enjoy about those things?

2) What things about our life together make you happy? How frequently do you notice those things?

3) What would you like to do together that we’ve never done? What makes it so inviting to you?

4) What was the last thing I did for you that you enjoyed? What made it so pleasant for you?

5) Which of our couple friends or acquaintances do you admire the most? What is it about their relationship that impresses you?

6) What is the best part about being together? How does that make you feel?

7) What makes us a good team? What could we do to be an even better team?

8) When did you feel I listened to you well? What would you like us to discuss but have hesitated to bring up?

9) On a scale of 1 to 10, how am I doing as a husband or wife? What one little thing could I do that would move that up a notch?

Will you help?

Here at PCN, church planting is part of our DNA. We believe planting new churches is an effective way to reach new people with the gospel of Jesus Christ! This year, we embarked on a fundraising journey to enable us to plant more churches. This is something we can all do together! Will you give a gift to help us plant more churches? Thank you for anything you can do!

Some may be exploring the possibility of continuing their education in the near future. Consider getting a discount through Venture Church Network, of which PCN is a member. Moody Bible Institute in Chicago will offer any student who is a PCN/VCN church member a 30% discount, which is huge since tuition is already paid if you get accepted at Moody.

Government Exemption

501(c)(3)

Just to remind our churches, as a member of Pacific Church Network and our national Venture Church Network, you are covered under Pacific Church Network's 501(c)(3) Group Exemption: 1585. This is a savings of both time, expense, and interference from the government to the churches maintaining their coverage under the Pacific Church Network group exemption. According to the IRS, churches are tax exempt and the contributions made to churches are valid as tax-exempt contributions by the very nature that they are churches, but sometimes State governments, banks, and other entities request confirmation of a church’s current 501(c)(3) status. We can send you a letter if needed.

Where Can I Send My Books?

Downsizing Your Library

secondhand_bookshop.jpg

We often hear about pastors downsizing their libraries, especially as they step out of full-time pastoral ministry. If you know of someone who is wondering what they could do with the theological books they have acquired over the years, there is a Theological University in Africa that is interested in being a resource for physical books. As many of you know, getting solid theological books into the hands of those in places like Africa or India is often difficult. Please note the following information:

Central Africa Baptist University in Zambia needs theological books (https://cabuniversity.com/). God has provided a 20-foot container to ship theological resources to CABU. The Gospel Coalition has recently written an article on this project which you can read (https://www.thegospelcoalition.org/article/african-theological-library/). Mark Dever is also assisting with his network to help with this project as well. If you know of someone who might like to help by sending their books that they no longer need in their library, please see the instructions listed. https://www.cabcusa.com/for-library-project

If you have questions, you can contact Phil Hunt at phunt@cabuniversity.com.

Highly Recommended Resource

Strategic Leader Impact

Paul Taylor, a former PCN Pastor and Board Member, is now pastoring a church in Boise, Idaho and recently went through a very difficult time with their denomination.

Paul said Eric Oleson and his organization were very helpful, and he highly recommends them for coaching, team training, and consultation. You might want to check them out. They ask, "Are you hungry for more? For greater impact, for accelerated growth, for a surge in leadership influence? Eric helps transform leaders who know they are capable of more, and can get you there, too. Using a strengths-based approach, Strategic Leader Impact identifies and executes a concrete plan of action that expands your impact, expedites your growth, and makes you into the dynamic leader you are hungry to be."
