January 1, 2018

Dear friends -

As we begin 2018, on behalf of our Board of Directors, Staff and Volunteers of the Spanish American Center, I want to take this opportunity to wish everyone happiness, health and prosperity throughout the coming year. This comes with our blessings and love.

Here at the Spanish American Center, we will continue to carry out our mission, which is to improve the lives of the people we serve with dignity, love and passion. God bless all.

Sincerely,

Neddy

We offer numerous programs for children and families at the Center throughout the year. This January, we provided a Dia de los Reyes observance, which focused exclusively on the children and families who were forced to flee their homes in Puerto Rico to start life again in Massachusetts - here in Leominster. These new clients of the Center are offered "regular" crisis services (food, information, referrals, advocacy), however the Staff and Board recognized the importance of providing respite for children from these painful adult realities. Displaced children need to have anchors to good childhood memories. Toys are important in order to let kids be kids! Through the great kindness and generosity of the award-winning composer, artist and actor Lin-Manuel Miranda and his "Toys 4 Puerto Rico" charitable foundation, fifty toys were procured to assist us with our children's fiesta. We are preparing the festivities now, so be sure to check our web site ( www.spanishamericancenter.org ) for feature articles and photos in the coming weeks. And if you wish to donate to Toys 4 Puerto Rico, here is the internet link:

The Spanish Center is selected to benefit from Hannaford anti-hunger program!
What is the “Fight Hunger” bag?
The Fight Hunger bag is another great reusable bag that also allows you to support your community! Every time you purchase a Fight Hunger bag, Hannaford donates $1.00 to a local Hunger Relief Agency. With local food pantries using a conservative estimate of $1 providing 1 meal, each sale of the Fight Hunger bag makes a big impact in the fight against hunger in our communities. SAC sends our thanks to HANNAFORD!
On December 17, 2017, the folks at Keller-Williams Realty Apple Country Team and Village Mortgage in Leominster spent the day collecting bags of food donated by kind neighbors in towns throughout central Massachusetts. These Holiday "elves" drove to the homes, picked up the bags of donated items and transported them to the Spanish Center where staff inventoried the food items and added them to our food pantry. The demand is very high of late due to new client needs. We are very thankful to Jason, Elaine and Brieanna for donating their time snd talents, especially at this busy holiday season.
Thank You! ¡Muchas Gracias!
SAC Participates In Leominster Inauguration Ceremony - January 2, 2018
On a chilly January, two members of the Spanish American Center community, Ms. Maria Alicea, Singer and Counselor; and Mr. Lionel Reinford, Artist and Board Member, participated in inauguration ceremonies at Leominster City Hall. This type of civic engagement is an example of how the Spanish American Center continues to promote inclusion and cultural awareness of our heritage in our community. Leominster's Mayor, Dean Mazzarella, and City Council Members were sworn in for their upcoming terms of office. Maria, a talented singer, and Lionel, a noted local artist offered congratulations to the newly elected dignitaries. The Center was honored to be included in such a central way.
