FOREIGN AFFAIRS SECRETARY LOCSIN IN WASHINGTON |
At an in-person US-PH Society luncheon on October 1 in his honor, Foreign Affairs Secretary Teodoro Locsin offered a briefing on his meetings with U.S. congressional leaders. Co-Chair Ambassador John Negroponte led a wide-ranging discussion of key foreign policy issues and reiterated the Society’s support for US-PH cooperation in meeting regional and transnational threats. Directors thanked the Secretary for his effective leadership in exploring new ways to strengthen bilateral relations, as the two countries work to sustain security cooperation, confront the pandemic, terrorism, human trafficking, and natural disasters in the face of climate change. |

US-PH JOINT VISION AT CONCLUSION OF BILATERAL STRATEGIC TALKS |
A series of high level two-way official visits capped by a Bilateral Strategic Dialogue in Washington DC addressed key concerns and provided a new joint vision in response to emerging challenges in the Indo-Pacific region. Philippine Ambassador Jose Romualdez offered a toast to "solidarity and celebration." Head of the U.S. delegation to the BSD Assistant Secretary Daniel Kritenbrink thanked both sides for producing a multi-faceted agreement summarized in the “Joint Vision for a 21st Century United States-Philippines Partnership,” a roadmap that encompasses security, health, economics, trade and more.

COMBATING ANTI-ASIAN VIOLENCE |
In response to shootings in Atlanta and attacks in New York directed at Asian Americans, the US-Philippines Society led by Honorary Chair Maurice "Hank" Greenberg and Co-Chair Ambassador John Negroponte issued a widely distributed public statement condemning violence, harassment and bias in all forms against the Asian American Pacific Islander community. The Society enjoined the community to discuss the history of discrimination and highlight the contributions of Asians particularly healthcare workers in the frontline of the pandemic. Distinguished panelists Ambassador Jose Manuel Romualdez, Senator Susan Lee (Maryland-District 16), Smithsonian Institute Interim Director Theodore Gonzalves offered perspectives on the causes of anti-Asian attitudes, a historical context and policy recommendations. |

LEGACIES: FILIPINO PIONEERS IN WASHINGTON DC |
At the 56th death anniversary of first PH Ambassador to the U.S. Joaquin Elizalde, the Society recognized his foundational role in setting in motion an enduring relationship by linking America and the Philippines through diplomatic service, business and education.
Filipinos immigrated to America in waves: as sailors, teachers and farm workers. Their experiences in Washington DC were told in a series ISTORYA DC Online and a Musical Concert. Poet Jose Villa Garcia came to pursue his studies in the U.S. and authored short stories and poems that inspired American music compositions. Nestora of the Calabria family helped to establish the Filipino Women's Club of DC. As branch chief of the U.S. Department of Health, Education and Welfare, Peter Jamero advocated for workers' rights. Mixed-media artist Pacita Abad conducted workshops using art as expression of Asian identity and heritage.

FOOD PACKS AND AID TO PH COMMUNITIES |

In the second year of the pandemic, Philippine villages experienced economic hardship compounded by climate change that affected fishing villages and communities in the typhoon's path. US-Philippines Society in partnership with Philippine Disaster Resilience Foundation, BDO Foundation and Banglapines International, delivered food packs and clean water in Visayas and Mindanao.
