Methodist Services is honored to announce that we have received the 2024 Chairman’s Council Clothing Insecurity Impact Award from Cradles to Crayons, the largest national nonprofit with Children’s Clothing Insecurity at the core of its mission. Clothing Insecurity Partner award recipients are chosen for their excellence in partnership to meet children’s clothing needs and mitigate Children’s Clothing Insecurity in collaboration with Cradles to Crayons.

More than 20 million children in the United States experience Clothing

Insecurity, defined as the lack of access to affordable, adequate, and

appropriate clothing. As a Cradles to Crayons Partner organization, we share a vision that children will one day have the basic essentials they need to thrive; our work to provide these essentials free of charge ensures that our children and families feel safe, valued, and confident every day. We look forward to continuing the work to end clothing insecurity alongside Cradles to Crayons.

Methodist Services' All Staff Day. All 120 of us! A day of training, development & team building culminated in a celebration of who we are & what we do. Given only an hour to work, 12 Groups of 10 “wrote a Methodist song, crafted spoken word or created a rap, showcasing the incredible talent and creativity of Methodist’s Staff!” Learn more about working here at www.methodistservices.org

In the late 1960’s, Germantown residents Larry & Geri Ewer were members of the Advocate St. Stephens United Methodist Church where Geri also taught Sunday School. Geri noticed that one 7-year-old girl, Liz, often wore the same clothing from week to week. They invited Liz to their home for dinner and provided her with new clothes.

Liz's mother had left and her father would often leave the children unattended. The Philadelphia Department of Human Services stepped in and placed Liz and some of her siblings in the custody of Methodist Home for Children.

Larry and Geri took Liz on outings and to the shore for a week. The Ewers were asked by Helen Draper if they would be interested in fostering Liz. Enthusiastically, they agreed! Liz joined the family, the day before she turned 8. Later, she was joined by the Ewers' biological children and became the big sister...still is to this day.

Larry and Geri helped Liz with her studies. Liz helped with the household chores and entertained her new sister and brother. From this structured environment she did well in school and professionally. Larry, Geri and the entire family remain close to Liz and see each other frequently, especially during the holidays.

Although Liz’s stay at Methodist Home for Children was not long, her tenure there allowed the opportunity for Larry & Geri to become her foster parents. Liz remarked, “I learned a lot about family and love from being in this wonderful family!”

Special thanks to former staffer, Joan Shumate, for shining a light on this meaningful Methodist memory.

From Heritage Farm - Farm Manager, Ryan Curran:

"As mid May approaches on the Farm, we begin planting the hot summer crops like tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers and eggplants. We're past any danger of frost and all plants are safe to move to their new home outside. As the planting continues, we also need to pay attention to the plants sown earlier in April. About every two weeks they will need to be cultivated or weeded to beat back the pressure of newly germinated weed seed. In addition to those activities arugula and radishes are ready to be harvested with peas and strawberries close behind them!"
