Greetings on a rainy Sunday morning. I am recovering from quite a week. After our wonderful Lombardi Gala, the week then was highlighted by the exciting receipt of our Notice of Grant Award for our CCSG. It was expected, but it still felt pretty terrific, I must say.

Georgetown Lombardi Awarded Top Designation by Federal Government

National Cancer Institute logo

The National Cancer Institute (NCI) awarded its most prestigious designation — “comprehensive cancer center” status — to Georgetown Lombardi in recognition of its high-impact research, community outreach and cancer care. This designation, awarded by way of a competitive, rigorous, peer-reviewed “cancer center support grant,” was first received by the cancer center 50 years ago. In addition, Hackensack Meridian Health’s John Theurer Cancer Center was renewed by the NCI as Georgetown Lombardi’s research consortium partner. Read more about this news.

At 36th Annual Lombardi Gala, Friends Help Push Boundaries

A community of nearly 500 new and longtime friends donned gowns and black ties for this year’s annual Lombardi Gala, Georgetown Lombardi’s largest continuous fundraising event. The April 27 event, held at The Anthem in Washington, raised more than $1.25 million in support of the cancer center’s research. Read more about this event.

The Aspirin Conundrum: Navigating Negative Results, Age, Aging Dynamics and Equity

A new study examining the role of aspirin in breast cancer treatment reveals critical issues related to health equity and aging that have broad implications for cancer and other disease intervention trials, say Georgetown Lombardi’s Jeanne Mandelblatt, MD, MPH, Candice Mainor, MD and Barry Hudson, PhD. They outlined their concerns in an editorial accompanying the study’s findings published April 29 in the JAMA. Read more about what they wrote.

New Study: Analysis Supports New Recommendation to Begin Mammogram Screening at 40

Georgetown Lombardi’s Jeanne Mandelblatt, MD, MPH, was senior author of a study informing the updated final recommendation of the United States Preventive Services Task Force regarding breast cancer screening, which were released April 30. Read more about this research.

Marshall Honored as a ‘Giants of Cancer Care’ Inductee

John L. Marshall, MD

John L. Marshall, MD, Georgetown Lombardi associate director for clinical operations and director of the Ruesch Center for the Cure of Gastrointestinal Cancer, was honored as the inductee in gastrointestinal cancer for the 12th-annual Giants of Cancer Care program, which celebrates the achievements of leading researchers and educators whose discoveries have propelled the field forward and laid the groundwork for future advances. Marshall was one of 15 finalists selected by a group of peer oncologists. He will be honored at an awards ceremony on Thursday, May 30, at the Adler Planetarium in Chicago, Illinois. Georgetown University has been invited to nominate a candidate for the 2025 Pew-Stewart Scholars Program for Cancer Research award. This award supports assistant professors who demonstrate outstanding promise as contributors in science relevant to the field of cancer. Strong proposals will incorporate particularly creative and pioneering approaches to basic, translational, and applied cancer research. Candidates whose work is based on biomedical principles but who bring in concepts and theories from more diverse fields are encouraged to apply. View full award eligibility details.

DEI Office Internship Provides Career-Affirming Experiences for School of Health Student

Lombardi DEI Office intern Lauren Massie presented a poster summarizing her work on the 2024 Lombardi Landscape Diversity Survey at a recent event. Attendees included School of Health Dean Christopher King, PhD, and Lombardi DEI Associate Director Kristi Graves, PhD (pictured).

 

Lauren joined the office for the final year of her bachelor's in health care management & policy in the School of Health. She offered valuable contributions to the design of the survey, which will be launched soon. She plans to pursue her master’s in health policy at Johns Hopkins University in the fall.

 

“This internship allowed me to embrace and enjoy supporting the diversity of an organization,” she said. “I enhanced my research skills in investigating best practices for conducting DEI surveys and deciding on demographic questions. I also participated in stakeholder meetings and made connections about the importance of DEI work at Lombardi.” Read more about Lauren's experience.

NEW 2024 Call for V Scholar Cancer Research Grant Applications

 

The V Scholar Award supports young tenure-track faculty early in their cancer research career by funding projects that are either laboratory-based fundamental research or translational research. This RFA is specifically for adult cancer research. The V Foundation has a fundraising focus on colorectal cancer in 2024 and welcomes proposals in this area, but this is not required. Please note that research areas not included in this scope are epidemiology, behavioral science, and health services research. We strongly encourage applications from those who identify as a member of an underrepresented in science minority racial or ethnic group. The total amount of the grant is $600,000, paid in three annual installments of $200,000. View full RFA. NEW Small Business Transition Grant for Academic Biotech Innovators


The Small Business Transition Grant is accepting applications from early career scientists seeking support in their pursuit of taking their cancer technologies from research institutions into a startup to advance their biotech inventions toward commercialization. This fast-track opportunity provides up to a total of ~$2.5 million for projects that fit into one of the following categories:

  • Therapeutics and preventive agents
  • Imaging technologies, interventional devices, and in vivo diagnostics
  • In vitro and ex vivo diagnostics and prognostics
  • Technologies for cancer prevention and control, supportive care, and survivorship

Those interested in applying should submit a letter of intent to NCI SBIR Program Director Saroj Regmi (saroj.regmi@nih.gov) by Sunday, July 21. Spring 2024 ASPIRE Award: Breaking Ground in Targeting Gastric and Esophageal Tumors


This request for proposals from the Mark Foundation for Cancer Research, DeGregorio Family Foundation and Torrey Coast Foundation is for projects focused on tumors of the upper GI tract. Proposals should aim to drive disruptive research, with the goal of advancing the field of gastric and esophageal cancer research and ultimately improving patient outcomes. Interdisciplinary collaborations are encouraged and independent investigators at all career stages, especially those new to the field of upper GI cancers, are welcome to apply. Phi Beta Psi Grant Proposal Invitation

 

The goal of the Phi Beta Psi Charity Trust is to advance cancer research nationwide to improve prevention, diagnosis and treatment by providing research grants to qualified investigators addressing original questions and hypotheses to be explored in basic and clinical studies in the field of cancer. Research applications must be focused on brain, breast, colorectal, endometrial, lung, ovarian, pancreatic or prostate cancer. Preference is given to young investigators with documented evidence of potential for conducting novel research of either basic or clinical aspects of cancer and cancer-related problems. Applications from established investigators exploring new and innovative areas of cancer research also will be considered. Postdoctoral fellows are not eligible. Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation Research Fellows Award Program


The Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation (MMRF) Research Fellows Award Program is an initiative that supports early career researchers at the postdoctorate, medical fellow or junior faculty levels currently active or interested in research in multiple myeloma research. The MMRF will provide $150,000 in research funding over two years to successful applicants who seek to learn more about the biology of multiple myeloma and identify new approaches to monitor for and treat the disease.
