Heavy Rain Flooding in Quechee July 10 2023

Flooding in Quechee

The heavy rains and catastrophic flooding that hit Vermont this week were captured locally on the Ottaquechee River by JAM producer Rick Russell on

July 10, 2023. Please consider making a donation to support flood relief for the many impacted Vermont communities. The Vermont Community Foundation offers one path for giving:

A treasure in Plain(field) sight

Legendary neo-classical

painter Maxfield Parrish lived for 68 years in Plainfield, NH where his priceless painting of an idyllic woodland scene, lake, and Mt. Ascutney graces the town hall's stage. Learn how this 1916 set, rigging, and stage pieces are being renovated. "It gave me a sense of awe and respect for what was here," says rigging restorer Eric Durett.

All hail the harper!

Hot weather calls for this cool concert from Brattleboro's Rachel Clemente, who graced First Congregational Church in Lebanon for a celestial show sponsored by the Upper Valley Music Center. It featured her compositions, Scottish tunes, and classical fare. Clemente told listeners, "This one's 'She Put Her Knee on the Old Man.' Do with that one what you will!"

Advanced Animation Camp Sneak Peak

Advanced Animation Camp Day 2

Animation is art made one frame at a time, 24 frames per second, to create the illusion of movement in a completely imagined world. It is detailed, slow work. Check out 8 seconds (do the math!) of magic created by JAM Campers last week as part of the Vermont-wide "Crowdsource Cinema" re-creation of Toy Story. Can you identify each young animator's unique style? Can you spot the claymation portion made on green screen? The week concluded with a visit from Joe Jacobs, CATV camp alum, Hanover High and USC School of Cinematic Arts grad now working for Insomniac Games, creator of Spider-Man 2, showing his original thesis animation film and introducing careers in animation.

Dance is motion and motion is life. In every culture around the world dance is a means of expressing identity and feelings and connect with others. Dance is the yeast that makes the bread rise. It is the essential ingredient in all celebrations of joyful life events. We love dancing and we invite you to join in!

In a society increasingly divided and isolated, storytelling can bring us together. Story Jam is a bi-monthly story circle where Upper Valley community members can meet to get to know each other through personal stories. Whether you are a new or seasoned storyteller; whether you are shy or extroverted – all are welcome!

Shelf Help is back!

NEW EPISODE #41 – A request from Matt S. for “gay/queer romance novels” prompted an extensive list from the booksellers, including when When Kate Met Cassidy, One Last Stop, Red White and Royal Blue (soon to be a movie), In At The Deep End, Ladies Guide to Celestial Mechanics, A Lady for a Duke, and all gay hockey books — which seems to be an extensive sub- category of this genre. Have fun with these!

Shelf Help is a collaboration between the Book Jam, a nonprofit designed to inspire readers; JAM – Junction Arts & Media, and three Upper Valley bookstores: Yankee Bookshop in Woodstock, VT; the Norwich Bookstore in Norwich, VT; and Still North Books & Bar in Hanover, NH.
