Its the Season for Love

Happy Valentines,

Our yoga practice embodies all the aspects of true love - kindness, compassion, non judgement, truthfulness and clarity. It also teaches us how to love without expectation and to learn to receive fully and unconditionally. As a parent I am often reminded how easily we forget this and how our judgement may be clouded by our own desires and objectives of ourselves and others.

"Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in ill will but rejoices with truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes and always perseveres." 1 Corinthians 13:4-8

Love, as Gandhi said, keeps us alive. It is the prerogative of the brave and whole-hearted and is the strongest force the world possesses.

Valentines, yes is a holiday with many nuances and distractions but it also a time to look fully at the way we engage and commit to our relationship and the way we love.

It is a time to rekindle passion, right wrongs and let your love protect and heal. Have a blessed, romantic, loving, powerful weekend.

Namaste, Christy

Meditation Classes Starting Saturday January 15th - Registration required!
Meet our new Meditation Teacher

Sotoananda has been practicing Hatha Yoga and Raja Yoga meditation  since he was a teenager. Searching for a deeper level of understanding of Yoga as a Path of Life he went to India where he  was initiated in Kriya  Yoga by Master Gyanswami, and later in Mantra yoga by Himalayan Tapaswi Yogi Sri Goraksh Babaji.

During the 45 minutes class you will explore a deeper level of Consciousness helped by body postures and breathing exercises.  Music and sounds will create an atmosphere of peace and tranquility that are going to guide participants to areas of the Self that are available to us "here and now".

Pose of the Week with Livity

Pose of the week Urdhva Dhanurasana (Full Bow Pose)

Open-Hearted, expressive and energetic pose that opens the front body and strengthens the bag of the body. Expand down in to the arms and lengthen away fully engaging in staying present in the pose for 3 - 15 breaths. Give yourself time to feel the nuance of the pose and let go of anything stuck in the body.

Livity gets Cooking!

(Guadalajaran Swiss Chard Quesadillas)
Mexican oregano is more aromatic than the Mediterranean oregano most cooks use, so it works especially well in spicy dishes.
  • 2 Tbs. vegetable oil
  • 1 small onion, chopped ( cup)
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced (about 2 tsp.)
  • 1 jalapeo or serrano chile, minced
  • tsp. cumin seeds
  • ⅛ tsp. Mexican oregano
  • cup tequila
  • 12 oz. Swiss chard, trimmed
  • 8 6-inch corn tortillas
  • 1 cup grated reduced-fat Monterey Jack cheese

1. Heat oil in pot over medium heat. Add onion, and saut 5 minutes, or until golden. Stir in garlic, chile, cumin and oregano, and saut 2 minutes. Add tequila, and simmer 1 minute, or until liquid has evaporated. Stir in chard. Cover, reduce heat to medium low, and steam 5 minutes, or until chard wilts. Uncover, and cook 3 minutes, or until liquid has evaporated.

2. Place 1 tortilla in skillet over medium heat. Sprinkle with 1/4 cup cheese. Top with 1/4 chard mixture and second tortilla. Cook 2 minutes per side, or until browned. Repeat with remaining ingredients. Slice into wedges; serve.

Livity off the Mat

Speaking of eating healthy!

Your best bet to eating healthy is starting with eating locally grown food. This means your food will be fresher and will also support our local economy. Not to mention local is more affordable.

Start by reducing the amount of  food you buy at the supermarket and replace it with an option at the farmers market or local farm shop. There are several local markets such as Holders on Sunday and Hastings, Brighton and Cheapside on Saturdays.

For those of us who have a hard time getting to the market on the weekend try a farmshop such as St. George farmers Co-op or local street venders.

Livity Song of the Week

Tis the season for love and our song of the week is Annie Lennox and Al Green's Put a little love in your heart.

Even after all this time, the sun never says to the earth, "you owe me."
Look what happens to a love like that, it lights the whole sky.
