Medicaid RAC issue resolved

Eighteen months ago, Colorado practices raised concerns to the Colorado Medical Society (CMS) regarding Medicaid audits of inpatient specialty care. With our partners in the Colorado Hospital Association (CHA), we took these concerns to the Department of Health Care Policy and Financing (HCPF) and CMS is pleased to report that advocacy on our members' behalf has literally paid off. The coding disagreement has been resolved for future audits and claims caught up in informal reconsideration and appeal. Read more here.

An urgent call to action: Your practice can help defend our stable liability climate

Liability caps and professional review are under attack and it will take a community-wide response to combat this threat. Stand with the Colorado Medical Society, COPIC, Colorado Hospital Association, Coloradans Protecting Patient Access (CPPA) and other trusted partners in safeguarding the integrity of Colorado's health care system and business environment by contributing financial support that will fuel a robust statewide ballot campaign. There are no restrictions on who can donate (individuals or businesses) or how much you can donate. As soon as possible:

  • Join CPPA
  • Donate by sending a check made out to the Colorado Medical Society with Liability Defense Fund written in the memo section, to 7351 E. Lowry Blvd, Suite 110, Denver, CO 80230.Or call the CMS offices at 720-859-1001 Monday-Friday 8:30 a.m.-5 p.m. to make a secure contribution using your credit card.

Has prior authorization delayed a patient's care? Share your story

A new bipartisan bill is aiming to streamline and improve Colorado’s prior-authorization system, to keep medical decisions between patients and physicians, and to prevent the tragic outcomes caused when insurance carriers delay and deny care. This legislation, HB24-1149, will empower patients and physicians to make important medical decisions and reduce the financial costs, patient trauma, and wasted valuable provider hours caused by delayed care.

This bill will be heard in the House Health & Human Services Committee on Wednesday, Feb. 21, and we need your stories to illustrate the burden on patients and practices. Share your prior authorization horror story on our campaign website, Health Can't Wait Colorado.

For those in the Denver Metro area, you're also strongly encouraged to attend a press conference on the West Steps of the Capitol at 12 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 21, before heading to the hearing. The more supporters we have in person, the better! Let us know you're coming by emailing kate_alfano@cms.org.

Physicians: Verify your license with FAMLI

Your patients may already be applying for FAMLI leave benefits and your participation is important. When Coloradans use My FAMLI+ to apply for medical care leave, they will need to identify their physician.

If you’re registered in My FAMLI+ and have verified your license, you’ll be notified whenever one of your patients applies for benefits. You or a delegated staff member can certify their Serious Health Condition Form online, saving yourself and your patient from passing around paperwork. If you don’t register and verify your license in My FAMLI+, expect to start seeing patients bring in paper Serious Health Condition Forms that you’ll have to fill out, sign and return to the patient. Click here to get started. Refer to our step-by-step user guide for health care providers if you need help finishing the license verification process. We also have a how-to video for additional support.
