April 2023

Update: Hospital discounted care requirements and education

House Bill 21-1198, otherwise known as Health Care Billing Requirements for Indigent Patients, establishes requirements for how hospitals screen, bill and collect payments from low-income patients. As of April 1, providers must use the updated versions of the Uniform Application and Federal Poverty Guideline Calculator -- both available here.

HCPF will be holding training for Hospital Discounted Care providers in late April and early May on the Screening and Application Process, Payment Plans and Collections, and the new Data Reporting Template. Follow the links below for more information and to register.

Colorado Medical Society launches wellbeing support for physicians, other licensees

Responding to the worsening trends in health care worker burnout, the Colorado Medical Society is proud to launch Doc2Doc Wellbeing Consulting. This new program offers Colorado physicians, residents/fellows, medical students and other licensees of the Colorado Medical Board three free consultations with a physician trained in psychiatry. We believe so strongly in physician wellbeing that CMS membership is not required to utilize this program, though we encourage membership to support this and other work.

  • Call 720-810-9131 to reach 24/7 line answered by a masters-level licensed clinician
  • Confidential; subject only to same reporting requirements as any licensed physician in Colorado
  • Schedule confidential follow-up with a physician trained in psychiatry (in person, video or phone call, depending on your preference)
  • Discuss any concern -- stress, relationship issue, poor outcome

Public Health Emergency is ending; help keep Coloradans covered

The Public Health Emergency (PHE) for COVID-19 is expected to end May 11, 2023 -- or earlier, given recent congressional action -- and with it comes the end of expanded eligibility for your patients who are covered by Health First Colorado (Medicaid) and Child Health Plan Plus (CHP+). The Colorado Department of Health Care Policy and Financing (HCPF) estimates 325,000 Coloradans may no longer qualify for safety net coverage and the department has asked providers and practices to help keep Coloradans covered.
