Clarification coming on cultural competency training

Several practices have reached out with questions about cultural competency/culturally sensitive and anti-bias training for physicians in response to requests from health insurers to report whether providers have undergone a relevant training (some calling it "mandatory").

Colorado Regulation 4-2-80 concerns network adequacy standards and reporting requirements for Colorado Option Standardized Health Benefit Plans. Under this regulation, health insurers must ensure at least 50 percent of providers and their front office staff have undertaken cultural competency training by Jan. 1, 2023, at least 75 percent have undertaken training no later than Jan. 1, 2024, and at least 90 percent have undertaken training no later than Jan. 1, 2025. Insurers will also need to report demographic data for providers and front office staff, and they will likely ask for this as well.

Colorado Medical Society has asked for legal review of the regulation to determine the legal responsibility of physicians and practices. Stay tuned.
