2023 CPT changes in effect; register for an AMA webinar

The American Medical Association's CPT update went into effect on Jan. 1. The CPT update involves 225 new codes, 93 revisions and 75 deletions, including changes that will impact primary care physicians who provide evaluation and management (E/M) services in hospitals, homes and nursing facilities. One news outlet reported that the update will reduce administrative burden.

The AMA will host a free webinar on Jan. 18, 2023, from 11 a.m. - 12 p.m. MST, that will help you understand how Current Procedural Terminology (CPT®) codes respond to changes in the health care landscape, spark and spur innovation, and serve to advance health equity efforts. Registrants will learn how the CPT process works, from the CPT Editorial Panel through the participation of specialty societies and workgroups; and how you and your society can get involved to strengthen the collective voice of the CPT code set and its development process, now and in the future. Register here.

Alert for physicians and billing staff: Colorado Hospital Discounted Care Program now in effect

Physicians and practice staff need to be aware of a new law that took effect on Sept. 1, 2022, that establishes requirements for how hospitals screen, bill and collect payments from low-income patients. One key aspect of HB21-1198: Hospitals must screen all patients who request to be screened, including those who are insured; if the hospital is unable to screen in the care setting, staff must attempt to screen afterward, via the patient’s preferred communication method, once per month for six months. During this six-month period, a patient can make the decision to essentially waive their commercial insurance coverage and opt into the Hospital Discounted Care program. Read more here.

Colorado Department of Labor and Employment presents guide to new family leave law

Payroll deductions for the new Family and Medical Leave Insurance (FAMLI) program began Jan. 1, 2023, and benefits will begin Jan. 1, 2024. Everything employers need to know about FAMLI is now available in CDLE's new Employer Guide (pdf). Bookmark the FAMLI Toolkit webpage for tools covering everything from counting your employees, calculating wages, a glossary of terms, and coordinating FAMLI with other leave benefits.

Update: 2022 MIPS hardship application deadline extended to March 3, 2023

Due to American Medical Association advocacy and outreach to the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (federal CMS), the agency has extended the deadline to file a 2022 MIPS Extreme and Uncontrollable Circumstances (EUC) hardship extension until March 3, 2023. The original deadline was Jan 3, 2023. If physicians feel they have been impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic in 2022 they may file a MIPS hardship exemption with the federal CMS to avoid a 2024 MIPS penalty. The AMA encourages practices to take advantage of this administrative relief; find more information and file your extension here.
