Welcome!
Students and volunteers enjoy some amazing home-cooked dishes at our summer party in August.
Hello volunteers, and welcome back from summer break! Fall quarter has just begun and is off to a great start. We hope everyone who attended our annual summer party enjoyed an evening of delicious food, student speeches and performances, and fun.  Here at our Lake City Learning Center, we are excited to welcome 41 new students this fall, for a total of 167 combined with returning students!  We are also pleased to announce that 87% of our students made gains between fall 2016 & summer 2017! Thank you all for your contributions which support this fantastic display of student success.

This term, we kick off our brand new tutoring block system, with set times for tutoring pairs to meet before or after class. Our Ready to Work class has also transitioned to being held four days a week instead of two. We are still accepting new students for this class - if you know anyone who could benefit from this course which offers workplace English and employment case management services, please let them know to call us!

Save the Date: Literary Mixer!
Bring a book. Have a drink.  Discuss.
We would like to welcome everyone to the fall term by inviting you to join us for a volunteer social event -  a Literary Mixer!  Come and bring a book you have read or are reading (e-books work too), enjoy a glass of wine, and strike up a conversation with other Literacy Source volunteers about your book. This event will take place at Literacy Source on Thursday, October 12, from 7:30 to 9 pm. During the event, w e will also be sharing the debut of our new Social Justice Lending Library.

We hope you can join us!
Note from our Instructional Director: Tutoring Changes
Cat Howell, Instructional Director
We're ready for a great fall quarter, with many full classes in new time slots.  To provide more structured support to our volunteers, we've implemented some instructional changes at our center.  We will now be matching students with tutors in tutoring block times, either before or after class. As part of this realignment, we're changing our tutor on-boarding process by offering a new Tutor Orientation training . This training will familiarize new and returning tutors with the updated logistics of tutoring at Literacy Source. It will also provide time to practice lesson planning using some of the tutoring kits ( pronunciation, beginning literacy, writing, reading, citizenship, etc.) available on the Tutoring Resources folder in our Google Drive.  We encourage both new and returning tutors who want information about the new materials to sign up for this training. The next one is on Friday, September 29,  from 9 am to 12 pm, and you can sign up for it here. Please talk to me or the advisor you work with if you have any questions.
Childcare
In an effort to eliminate barriers for our students, we are proud to announce that we have added an evening childcare for school-aged children on Mondays and Wednesdays! We'd like to thank volunteer  Kate Jorgenson f or helping us provide a quiet, supervised setting so mom or dad can focus on their own class.

We are still in the process of recruiting and hiring a student to be our new childcare leader on Monday and Wednesday mornings from 9 to 10:30 am . Thanks so much to our lovely board member  Lul ú  Roque Weda for helping to fill this role in the meantime. W e are still seeking the help of another volunteer to temporarily assist us as needed.  Please contact  Lynn   if you are interested.
Volunteer Trainings
New Volunteers and staff at our Working with Adult Learners training on September 18.
We've had fabulous volunteer turnouts at the trainings we've hosted so far in September to kick off the fall term, including Citizenship Toolkit and  Working with Adult Learners in a Diverse Environment (a required training for all of our volunteers). Additionally, our lively guest trainer,  Alysan Croydon, presented her Beginning Literacy training, bringing her wealth of 30 years experience in teaching and training in ESOL. If you couldn't make it to Alysan's training this time around... fear not! She will be facilitating ESOL trainings at the  Community Volunteer Training  on October 14, as well as a Teaching and Planning Lessons training at Seattle Central Library on October 28. A big thanks to the many volunteers who attended these trainings. We hope they have been beneficial as you continue to work with our adult learners!

Social Justice Lending Library
To create and preserve a safe and inclusive learning community, we at Literacy Source are dedicated towards strengthening our collective self-awareness, cultural consciousness, and intercultural communication skills. As part of this effort, we are proud to introduce our new Social Justice Lending Library, which will offer an evolving list of resources for volunteers and teachers. Check out a book from the library, or bring one of your own to share! If you don't see what you're looking for, please add it to the clipboard next to the bookshelf. We will be debuting this new resource during our upcoming Literary Mixer on October 12.
