A note from Hemali Shah, Chief Equity Officer:
As we observe Black History Month, let’s take a moment to celebrate the achievements and contributions of Black Americans throughout history. From civil rights movement to the arts, sciences, and beyond, black individuals have left an indelible impact on our society. During this month, let us honor their legacy and continue to work towards a future that is inclusive, equitable, and just for all.
How is Lexington Celebrating Black History Month?
The Association of Black Citizens of Lexington (ABCL), initiated the Black History Project of Lexington. “ABCL’s Black History Portrait Banners honor 29 trailblazers. They represent four centuries of contributions of Black residents to American history and culture.” (abclex.org) You can see these banners up close at Cary Library. Cary Library also has upcoming events and reading lists in their February newsletters (Adults and Children).
The Cary Library announced the purchase of the Oxford African American Studies Center. This comprehensive online resource is edited by Henry Louis Gates Jr., Director of the Hutchins Center for African and African American Research at Harvard University, and will serve researchers, teachers, students, organizations and citizens who wish to expand their knowledge of important figures and events in African American history.
Home access is available to Lexington residents with a Minuteman library card.
For access, go to the Cary Library homepage and from the Collections & Resources tab, select Online Resources. Scroll down to the Social Justice category, choose the Oxford African American Studies Center, and enter your library card number.
