Weigh in on the Future of Lexington's Waste Collection

Lex Get to Zero Waste logo

The Town is working to cut down the amount of local waste ending up in landfills by encouraging participation in recycling and composting programs. Through Lexington's Zero Waste Plan, the Town strives to reach a 90% diversion rate of local waste by 2050.

So how can you contribute? Take this survey!

The survey should only take 5 to 10 minutes to complete, and will allow you to share your thoughts on the following topics:

  • Expanding curbside compost collection town-wide
  • Converting to automated curbside collection with wheeled carts
  • Evaluating every-other-week trash collection
  • Evaluating rate structure incentives for curbside collection
  • Providing more reuse collection

Please complete the survey by April 12, so we can make good use of your feedback.

The survey was designed by a team of Tufts University graduate students in the Department of Urban and Environmental Policy and Planning. The group's semester-long research project will culminate in recommendations for the Town on how they can change their waste collection system and achieve waste reduction.

Water Meter Readings to Begin March 25

a picture of a water meter

The Water & Sewer Division of the Lexington Department of Public Works (DPW) will begin reading all town water meters on Monday, March 25. Readings will continue through the end of April.

There are approximately 1,300 meters that still need to be read manually. If you have not had your water meter upgraded yet, please call (781) 274-8359 or (781) 274-8370 or email utilitybilling@lexingtonma.gov to set up an appointment as soon as possible.

If an inside meter cannot be accessed or an outside meter pad cannot be read, a self-addressed, stamped card will be left at the business or residence. It is crucial that the actual reading on your meter be recorded on this card and returned by mail within three (3) business days. When you fill in the meter reading, please include all digits including leading and trailing zeroes, starting from left to right. This will help to insure accurate billing.

If a card is not returned, water billing will be based on estimation. Meter readings will not accepted over the phone.

Cooperation with the Town’s water meter reading program is most appreciated. Questions and concerns can be directed to the DPW Operations Office at (781) 274-8300 extension 1.
