Modern Pronouns Talk

Wednesday, October 18

Lexington Community Center

Using “they and them” in the singular may seem to go against what you learned about grammar in grade school, but you’ve probably been noticing a lot of people using the pronouns they/them instead of he/him or she/her. Terms such as nonbinary and gender fluid have made it into mainstream media. Wondering what it all means? Would you like to learn more about how using affirming language and pronouns can help you create a more inclusive community? Join us for a talk by Julie Nowak (she/they/xe), LGBTQIA+ Initiative Coordinator at Springwell. Questions are warmly welcome throughout the presentation.

8:00 PM

Cary Hall

In the years after WW II, American faculty have dominated in Nobel Prizes, while millions of international students attend American universities. We have become—and continue to be—the envy of the world despite recent hostility in our own country. How did this happen?

Fall Goat Open House at Chiesa Farm: Oct. 8

Come and join the local Lexington goats for their daily pasture walk through the fields and woodlands at Chiesa Farm. Each season the land provides them with diverse plant life. The goats are very specific to what they need to eat depending on many factors.

We will have two Lexington herds, totaling 13 female dairy goats. Learn about the goats and how they are working to keep invasive plants in check. All adults and children are welcome. No dogs please. Park at Diamond Middle School using the Hathaway/Sedge Road entrance or park at Fiske school and walk across to the pastures.

Scoop the Poop

Lexington has an estimated 2,500 dogs. Dogs relieve themselves every day, producing an average of 3/4 pound of waste per dog. That's over 6 tons of dog waste each and every week.

It's important for pet owners to scoop up after their dogs in parks, on bike trails, and anywhere else.

Visit the Animal Control webpage for more information, including the number to call if you see a trap or an ensnared/injured fox.

Indigenous Peoples’ Day

Monday, October 9, is recognized as Indigenous Peoples’ Day. This day serves as a poignant reminder of the ancestral lands on which we stand and the original inhabitants who safeguarded and nurtured these lands for generations.

Indigenous communities have played an integral role in shaping the vibrant tapestry of our land for generations, offering invaluable wisdom, traditions, and a deep connection to the environment. As we acknowledge their enduring legacy, let us also reflect on the importance of unity, respect, and understanding among all residents.

Join us in celebrating Indigenous People’s Day by taking the time to learn about the unique histories and cultures of Indigenous peoples and by actively supporting initiatives that promote their well-being and representation.

This year’s IPD celebration will also highlight the work of local artisans Claudia Fox Tree (Arawak/Yurumein) of Arawak Design and Xochi Kountz of Crafts for Justice. Event co-sponsors will host informational tables to share the important work they do.

The program will take place on the central quad at Middlesex Community College in Bedford. Plenty of free parking is available. Bring your own chairs/blankets for seating. In the event of rain, festivities will be held in the nearby East Café.
