Lexington Police Department Launches Blue Envelope Program

lexington police department blue envelope program

The Lexington Police Department is proud to announce our participation in the Blue Envelope Program. This initiative represents a collaborative effort aimed at fostering a safer and more understanding environment for drivers with autism spectrum disorder during traffic stops.

Drivers with Autism, or other neurodiversities, will be encouraged to keep a blue envelope with them in their car. This envelope will contain the driver's essential documents—including license, registration, and a contact card. On the outside, the envelope features critical communication guidelines specifically tailored to assist law enforcement officers in recognizing and adapting their approach when interacting with a driver who has autism or other neurodiversity.

The Blue Envelope represents a symbol of our commitment to inclusivity and understanding. It represents a step forward in ensuring that every driver, regardless of their neurological differences, can experience a sense of safety and respect on the road. Through this program, we aim to foster a culture of awareness and compassion that benefits everyone involved.

These envelopes are available at the Lexington Police Department or local State Police barracks. For more information on this program, please contact Detective Jeff Chaisson or click here

The Town of Lexington is excited to announce the expansion of its curbside composting pilot program!

2,000 additional Lexington households will be able sign up for free curbside pickup of food waste and other compostable items. This expansion will bring the total number of participating households to 4,000.

Right now, compostable items make up 35% of Lexington's waste stream. This pilot is a critical step in reducing waste in our community.

Cyclical Inspections Underway for Residential Properties

The Lexington Assessor's Office began completing cyclical inspections during the week of April 15. These inspections are required, by the State, to happen at least once every ten years.

The inspections will be completed by either a member of Town Staff or an outside contractor brought in to assist with the process. Every inspector will carry a Town ID badge.

What does the inspection process look like?

Inspectors will knock on your door to identify themselves. If you are home, the inspector will ask you if they can perform a walkthrough of the exterior of your home, as well as the interior. You are not required to allow them inside. The exterior inspection verifies the size and condition of your home. The interior inspection helps accomplish the same verification to ensure the home is valued appropriately. The data collected during the interior inspection, which includes the current number of bedrooms and bathrooms, is also shared publicly to allow for accurate real estate records. Again, you are not required to let the inspector inside your home, however, if they cannot complete a walkthrough of the interior, they will need to estimate the current number of rooms and the condition of the home based on previous records, which could impact the overall value of the home if major changes have been made.

What if I'm not home?

If you are not home when the inspector arrives at your property, they will complete the exterior inspection and leave behind a yellow card, like the one featured in this article. If you receive one of these cards, you can call to set up an appointment for the inspector to return. You cannot schedule your inspection ahead of time for any other reason.

Questions?

If you have any questions about the cyclical inspection process, you are encouraged to contact the Assessor's Office by phone at 781-698-4578.

Improving Communication

Hello Lexington,

We are working hard to improve communication between Town Offices and the wonderful residents we serve. Part of our effort involves better utilizing existing resources to keep you informed and safe. One of those resources is called CodeRED. You may have heard of it referred to as "reverse 911". The program was initially designed to send out emergency alerts and notifications on a moments notice, but we've realized it can do so much more.

If you are signed up for CodeRED alerts, you may have received a message recently about HomeWorks Energy Canvassing taking place around Town. HomeWorks is an official Town partner, and they have been going door to door in different neighborhoods to promote free home energy assessments. HomeWorks has been letting us know which neighborhoods they plan to visit, and we've been sending out messages targeted specifically to those areas several hours before canvassers begin their work. These daily notifications, along with the canvassing efforts, have led to a substantial increase in households signing up for home energy assessments.

This is just one example of how we can better utilize CodeRED, but we need your help to make the most of it.

Sign up for CodeRED today!

You can opt to receive notifications by phone call, text message, email, and even mobile app notifications. You can opt-out at any time.

If you have any questions, please call 781-698-4548.
