LINK TO HOPE NEWSLETTER
Kentucky CancerLink is a non-profit organization whose mission is to reduce and/or eliminate barriers to screening, diagnosis, and treatment of cancer. We work alongside Kentuckians in need of life-saving cancer screenings or in need of support while on a cancer journey. We strive to be a link to hope...
Greetings from the Executive Director:

There was never a night or a problem that could defeat sunrise or hope.” – Bernard Williams

Hi Friends,

It's hard to think of ourselves as anything but blessed these days. As our friends and neighbors are dealing with the devastation in Eastern Kentucky, I have been so inspired by stories of the helpers. The strength and perseverance of Kentuckians is unmatched. As a team, our hearts are with them. Please work to find ways to help as even a little done by many can make a great impact.

Be safe and take care of each other. Thank you for staying engaged with Kentucky CancerLink as we work to be a link to hope to Kentuckians on a cancer journey.

Read on for updates.

Blessings,

Melissa Karrer

Out and About
Melissa and Melanie attended the Kentucky Chamber's 2nd annual Women's Summit at the Central Bank Center in Lexington on July 11. It was a great event and a unique opportunity to network with women across the Commonwealth who play a crucial role in Kentucky's success.

Melissa, Syrena, & Melanie were in Frankfort on the July 15th for the ceremonial bill signing of HB 219, the lung cancer screening initiative, as well as several other very impactful bills including HB 525 which provides reimbursement for certain services provided by certified community health workers. They had a photo op with Gov. Beshear and had the opportunity to get some puppy cuddles in with the First Pup, Winnie. Lots of great bipartisan work being done in the Commonwealth.
Melanie attended the Bluegrass State Games on 7/23/22, in collaboration with the team at CHI St. Joseph Healthcare Lexington, one of our fabulous partners. Look for us again at the Midsummer Night's Run in downtown Lexington on August 13!
Melissa, Gabby, & Melanie attended the Health & Wellness Fair at Centro de San Juan Diego on July 31. The event was attended by over 350 community members and partners in the Lexington & surrounding areas with a special focus on the Hispanic community. It was a wonderful opportunity to educate and navigate individuals in need of colon cancer screenings and other needs as well.

Tomato, Peach, & Burrata Salad

A fresh & simple salad made with some of summer's most delightful commodities- fresh tomatoes, juicy peaches, fresh basil, burrata cheese & balsamic. It's easy, refreshing, and full of flavor.

Key Lime Pie

This key lime pie recipe is easy & delicious. You can never beat the real thing; however, Nellie & Joe's key lime juice (found in the juice aisles in most grocery stores) used in place of fresh squeezed key limes also works great. Don't substitute the homemade graham cracker crust though...trust me on this.

Spa Smoothie

a specific formula of refreshing ingredients to help you build a blood sugar–balancing meal replacement shake with enough protein, fat and fiber to keep you full.

Lung Cancer Screening Guidelines
Low-dose CT screening (LDCT) is a test used to detect lung cancer before any symptoms appear. Under the new lung cancer screening guidelines, those ages 50-80 who have a 20 pack-year smoking history or who have quit smoking in the past 15 years should get screened for lung cancer. Under the new guidelines, more women, Black and Latino individuals are considered at high risk.
