Glass House Gala 2013 a Success
   Wendy Freeman Gala 13
Guests at this year's groovy Wildflower Power!
Glass House Gala raved about the fun they had with our 1960s themed evening featuring Beatles tribute band
American English, go-go girls doing the watusi, and "hippies" handing the guests wildflowers upon arrival.

Held in the Sofitel Hotel's Grand Ballroom on Saturday, April 13th, and chaired by Michael Keable and Anne
Van Wart, Conservancy Nutson Familysupporters enjoyed a delicious three-course dinner to the ethereal  sounds of the Sandalwood Sitar Ensemble followed by a live auction with Master of Ceremonies T.J. Shanoff of Second City.  The auction included a guitar autographed by Paul McCartney,  a fine-dining package, and a luxury trip to New Orleans.

This joyous evening celebrating the environmental power of wildflowers ended with cocktails, dancing, and a
glo-stick waving sing-a-long to the Beatles' song
"Hey Jude."
   Proceeds benefit the Conservancy's
operations and programs.

Bunker Area Restoration
Muddy Mess Controlled by Planting Project bunker erosion 2

A problem area at the North Pond Nature Sanctuary we call "The Bunker" was repaired by our staff and volunteers in June.  The Bunker is an old storage space with metal doors built into a hillside on the east side of the pond.  Over the years, the soil around the bunker eroded and rain would wash the loose soil onto the adjoining walking path making it a muddy mess.

Our staff researched native plants with deep root systems that could tolerate the shade conditions of the area.  Volunteers from our North Pond Gardeners Program assisted in laying down a biodegradable erosion mat made of straw to keep the soil in place, then planted through the mat.  As the plants establish, their long, inter-twining root systems will hold the soil in place and keep the path permanently free of future muddy messes.

Many thanks to our great staff and wonderful volunteers who participated in this project!

Divvy Bike Share Program
Arrives in Lincoln Park & Throughout Chicago

 Divvy Bike
If you haven't seen them yet, the sky-blue bicycle rental stations popping up at street corners and parkways throughout the city, you soon will.

Over 70 new Divvy Bike stations have been installed and another 230 will be installed by the end of this summer.  The bikes will provide residents and tourists with a new way to get around town.  Based on programs used in other large cities around the world, Chicago's system will allow riders to pick up a bike at one location and return it to any other Divvy bike share station in the city.  This allows riders to travel one-way to anywhere Divvy stations are located.  Rentals begin at 30 minutes and annual memberships are available.

The Conservancy worked with Alderman Michele Smith, the Chicago Department of Transportation and the Chicago Park District to locate stations in South Lincoln Park.
