TAKEAHEALTHYSTANDTake a Healthy Stand

The foundation underpinning Limoneira's Take A Healthy Stand™ educational campaign is simple messaging supported by research by the Institute of National Health and other responsible, objective organizations.

One (of the many) benefits that lemons provide include:

Cardiovascular (Heart) Health Benefits

Cardiovascular disease remains the leading cause of death in the United States. In fact, according to a 2019 report from the American College of Cardiology, every 40 seconds someone will have a stroke. Diet and lifestyle both play a huge role in heart disease prevention. Studies published in the Journal of Nutrition and Metabolism have shown that plant compounds in lemons known as hesperidin and diosmin have been found to help lower cholesterol. It has also been demonstrated that walking and eating lemons everyday is associated with a decrease in blood pressure.

Working with our Grocery Retail Partners to Get Shoppers Healthy

Limoneira and Registered Dietician Nutritionist Megan Roosevelt are connecting with Grocery Retail Nutritionists to support getting their shoppers healthy.

Additionally, in-store educational grocery retail displays, explanatory in-store materials, healthy and great tasting recipes support the campaign.

Driven in part by emerging food fortification technologies and discoveries of nutrient benefits, consumers are choosing to make the most of their caloric intake. Hence, the growth of functional foods is set to outpace the growth of conventional foods around the world-across both developed and emerging markets globally. Three-fourths of U.S. consumers believe healthy foods and beverages can be used to increase the quality of their lives.
In addition, more than a quarter of Americans believe functional foods and beverages can be used in place of some medicines. It may not be surprising, then, that a majority of consumers would use foods and beverages to prevent and treat many health conditions, including heart disease, high blood pressure, lack of energy, intestinal irregularity, and even cancer.

To get in the spirit  (and for a refreshing late-summer cooling quencher) take a look at the recipe below:

Mediterranean Mint Lemonade

It's generally accepted that the people in countries bordering the Mediterranean Sea live longer and suffer less than most Americans from cancer and cardiovascular ailments. The not-so-surprising secret is an active lifestyle, weight control, and a diet low in red meat, sugar and saturated fat and high in produce, nuts and other healthful foods.

Try the delicious Mediterranean Mint Lemonade and consider using the whole lemon.

This creates a more dense and frothy lemonade AND provides substantial health benefits.  Hesperidin and Diosmin, compounds in lemons have been found to help lower cholesterol and d-limonene (found in Lemon peels) has been shown to have cancer-preventing properties.

Ingredients

*    2 cups crushed ice
*    4 cups water
*    2 large Limoneia lemons, washed, cut into small pieces, and seeds removed
*    Juice of 1 large Limoneira lemon
*    1 bunch fresh mint leaves, stems removed (about 25-40 mint leaves), more for later
*    1 cup sugar, more to your liking

Directions

Add all the ingredients to the pitcher of a high-quality blender. Cover and push blend or liquefy (high-speed function), until you achieve the desired drink consistency.

Taste and add more sugar or mint leaves, if you like. Blend again.
Pour the lemonade into a serving pitcher through a mesh strainer. Add fresh mint leaves to the pitcher. Cover and refrigerate until you are ready to serve.
If you like, strain the lemonade again as you pour into serving glasses. Enjoy cold!

If your blender is weaker, you will want to cut the lemons into smaller pieces, and also finely chop the mint before blending.

LEMONSROCKLemons Rock! According to The Packer and Fresh Trends, Lemons were Among the Top Fruits Consumers Bought in the Past Year

Coming in as the Number 5 fruit (after 2 ties for first and second place) and the Number 15 item overall of those studied in Fresh Trends 2019 The likelihood of a lemon purchase increased three percentage points from last year.

Lemons were liked by people of all ethnicities; those in the all other category were a bit more likely to buy than those from other ethnic backgrounds. The region played a role as well. Shoppers on both coasts were more likely to bring home lemons than those in the Midwest or South. Consumers in the top income bracket earning more than $100,000 annually comprised the group most likely to buy lemons overall.

One-tenth of buyers said they chose organic product each time they made a lemon purchase. Twenty-eight percent of buyers reported making periodic organic lemon purchases in the past 12 months.

National Lemon Meringue Pie Day - To celebrate this yummy holiday, we're revising our classic recipe for Lemon Meringue Pie!

Ingredients
*    1 cup organic sugar
*    ¼ cup cornstarch
*    1 can coconut milk
*    1 cup lemon juice
*    1 tbsp lemon zest
*    3 organic eggs
*    1 pie crust - store bought or homemade

Directions
Preheat oven to 350° F. Then in a large saucepan (with no heat), combine organic sugar with cornstarch and sea salt and whisk together until well mixed. Turn the burner to low and gradually stir in coconut milk, then bring heat to medium. Stir constantly until the mixture begins to boil. Simmer for one minute, stirring constantly, then turn off the heat. Separate the egg yolks and whites into two separate bowls, then set the egg whites aside for later. Beat the yolks with a small whisk, and then add ¼ cup of the hot sugar mixture. Mix until well combined. Gradually stir the yolks into the remaining hot sugar mixture, then turn the heat to low. Simmer for one minute stirring constantly. Turn off the burner, then stir in the lemon juice and lemon zest. Cool slightly, about 15 minutes. Then pour into the pre-baked pie crust. In a glass or metal mixing bowl, beat egg whites on medium speed for about a minute, until foamy. Then turn to high speed and gradually add in sugar until stiff, glossy peaks form. Smooth the meringue over the pie and spread the edge of the crust. Bake at 350° F for 12-15 minutes or until the meringue is light and golden brown. Cool on the counter for one hour, then refrigerate for 3 hours for the filling to set completely.

Finish off the evening with their superb Lemon Tartlette (lemon curd, raspberry and Italian Meringue).

 The Many Benefits of Drinking Lemon Water

Many health practitioners note that water is a nutrient that our bodies need that is present in liquids, plain water, and foods. All of these are essential daily to replace the large amounts of water lost each day. Kaiser Permanente nephrologist Steven Guest, MD said "Fluid losses occur continuously, from skin evaporation, breathing, urine, and stool, and these losses must be replaced daily for good health. Additional benefits of drinking water with lemon juice include adding flavor to regular water, providing an excellent source of Vitamin C, skin health, PH Balance, helping with weight loss, breath freshening, the removal of toxins from the body, and as an aid to digestion.

Limoneira Lemons offer the perfect way to easily enjoy fresh lemon water. Look for them at your favorite retailer today.

TODAYSDIETICIANToday's Dietician - The Power of Produce in Healthy Aging

In an article by Carrie Dennett, MPH, RDN, CD in Today's Dietician researchers discovered a significant association between higher consumption of fruits and vegetables and healthier bones in the late 1960s, prompting recommendations to eat a diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and vegetable-based protein to help reduce bone loss.

Since then, several population-based studies also have found associations between fruit and vegetable intake and bone health. Diets rich in vegetables and fruits contribute to a favorable ratio of sodium to potassium, which may reduce urinary calcium loss. They also contain magnesium, calcium, and vitamins A, C, E, and K, all of which have benefits for bone health. Also, increased polyphenol and fiber intake may decrease the age-related chronic inflammation that can exacerbate bone loss.

A 2015 New Zealand study randomized 50 healthy postmenopausal women to eat at least nine servings of different combinations of vegetables, herbs, and fruits for three months. This included six servings of vegetables-with at least two servings of leafy greens-and one serving of culinary herbs. One group emphasized specific vegetables, herbs, and fruits with properties that inhibit bone resorption (breakdown and absorption), including citrus, prunes, lettuce, broccoli, tomatoes, cucumbers, green beans, onions, garlic, parsley, sage, rosemary, and thyme. This group experienced improvements in markers of bone health.
Looking at cognitive health, a 2017 systematic review and meta-analysis of six prospective cohort studies involving a total of 21,175 participants found that intake of fruits and vegetables was inversely associated with the occurrence of cognitive disorder, including Alzheimer's disease, dementia, and cognitive decline/impairment.

Compared with the lowest level of consumption, the risk was 26% lower at the highest level of fruit and vegetable consumption. The authors said this was likely due to antioxidants in fruits and vegetables, such as vitamin C, vitamin E, flavonoids, and carotenoids, along with phytoestrogens and polyphenols.

BENTOBOXConsumers Shift to Fresh-Focused, Snack-Style Lunches and Retailers Respond

According to Progressive Grocer, the bento box is the new brown bag.

In Japan, bento is a lacquered or decorated lunchbox, traditionally containing such items as rice, vegetables and sashimi (raw fish with condiments). But the term has taken on a new meaning among U.S. consumers, particularly for busy moms who are looking for more creative and healthy ways to package their children's lunches. All you have to do is type #bentobox on Instagram to see the many ways that people are getting creative with their midday meals.

At the center of this trend is a move toward more fresh-focused, snack-style lunches - in which consumers can incorporate numerous bite-sized tastes, while hopefully including essential meal components such as protein, whole grains, fruits, and vegetables.

With this growing trend, grocers have an important role to play - as well as an opportunity to grow sales in several fresh categories - by merchandising these bento-type meal ideas in the front of their stores, in the deli and in other sections. They can also educate and inspire their shoppers with lunch meal ideas and preparation tips to help save time.

EATBRIGHTERLimoneira Supports the Produce Marketing Association and Sesame Street to Eat Brighter

Diet is the number one cause of mortality and obesity issues in the U.S. At the same time, fresh produce consumption remains low.   Sesame Workshop and the produce industry share a common goal and view the intersection of marketing, fresh produce, and brand trust as a powerful instrument to inspire children ages 2 to 5, and their parents and caregivers, to choose fresh fruits and vegetables. This is a great way to celebrate Sesame's 50th anniversary.

According to the Produce Marketing Association, nearly one in three children in America is overweight or obese. And childhood obesity is now the number one health concern among parents in the United States, topping drug abuse and smoking. At the same time, fresh produce consumption remains far below recommendations.  Let's all get behind Eat Brighter for a healthier next generation.

SOLARSolar Eclipse Over La-Serena Chile - July 2nd, 2019

A total solar eclipse occurred at the ascending node of the Moon's orbit on July 2.  Totality was visible from the southern Pacific Ocean east of New Zealand to the Coquimbo Region in Chile and Central Argentina at sunset, with a maximum of 4 minutes 32 seconds visible from the Pacific Ocean.

A solar eclipse occurs when the Moon passes between Earth and the Sun, thereby totally or partly obscuring the image of the Sun for a viewer on Earth. A total solar eclipse occurs when the Moon's apparent diameter is larger than the Sun's, blocking all direct sunlight, turning day into darkness. Totality occurs in a narrow path across Earth's surface, with the partial solar eclipse visible over a surrounding region thousands of miles wide.

Totality was visible in a large portion of Coquimbo Region in Chile and small parts of Atacama Region. Cities in the path include La Serena and La Higuera. Approximately 300,000 people visited La Serena to view the event. Our friends and colleagues at Limoneira's and Rosales S.A. in La Serena took the wonderful lemon-shaped solar eclipse photo.
