LIKE PLAYERS, COACHES SHOULD ALWAYS BE LOOKING TO IMPROVE
By Greg Bates – The offseason is a time to review, refocus, set goals and get prepared for the fall season.

Those areas of emphasis don’t just apply to hockey players, but also to coaches. Now is the time for coaches — whether they just wrapped up their first season or finished off their 15th year behind the bench — to figure out how to become better at their craft.

“The art of coaching is self-improvement,” USA Hockey ADM Regional Manager Joe Bonnett said. “At any level, as soon as you stop improving or thinking or reflecting, you’re somewhat dead in the water in this profession. If you look at all the great coaches in any sport, it’s the word ‘kaizen.’ A lot of European clubs use it. It’s basically continual improvement. That is also tied in very strongly with good coaches, progressive coaches that have a growth mindset.

ONE-TIMERS
A New Approach to Goaltender Development
USA Hockey is on a mission to make every coach a goalie coach.

“As we’re moving towards a more player-centered environment with our athletes and development, we’ve come to the realization that if you are a coach for a hockey team, you need to be a coach for every athlete on the team,” said Steve Thompson, ADM Goaltending Manager for USA Hockey.

Sometimes coaches may have the attitude that ‘I don’t know anything about playing goalie’ or even be afraid to ‘mess up’ the goalie. However, to Thompson, it doesn’t matter what position a coach might have played growing up or if they even played hockey at all.
Offseason Training Is A Good Idea, But How Often and How Much Depends on The Player
By Greg Bates - When the offseason rolls around, it’s time for younger hockey players to reflect on their past season and get prepared for fall tryouts.

How hard and how often a youth player trains during the summer months depends on age and maturity, noted Brian Galivan, head of sports science and performance for the USA Hockey National Team Development Program.
