It's Lights On Afterschool season! | It's on! Lights On Afterschool is back for its 25th year—please join us in the nation's only celebration of afterschool and out-of-school time programs! With 10 weeks until October 24, now is the perfect time to register and begin planning your event. Every year, Lights On Afterschool shines a spotlight on the importance of afterschool programs, with celebrations taking place at more than 8,000 events attended by 1 million Americans. Boys & Girls Clubs of Lee County distributes school supplies to students | Thanks to a successful back-to-school event hosted by the Boys & Girls Clubs of Lee County, children and teens across Lee County are ready for class. Nearly 275 club members and their families attended the 2024 Back-to-School event on July 24 at the Park Meadows Community Club, where they picked out new backpacks and filled them with essential school supplies. | | | | |
Inaugural Summer Youth Internship Program Deemed a Success | The Children’s Services Council of Leon County (CSC Leon) celebrated the successful conclusion of its first Summer Youth Internship Program with a special commencement event on Thursday, August 8, at the TNL Performing Arts Center on South Monroe. The event brought together interns, their families, and employers to celebrate the achievements of the 41 high school students who participated in this pioneering initiative. | | | | |
Broward County Public Schools expands after school supper programs | Broward County Public Schools' Supper Program makes sure that over 9,000 participating students receive nutritious meals daily. BCPS has announced that they have expanded their After School Supper Program. The meals are funded by the federal Child Care Food Program. | | | | |
School board applauds STEM approval | Putnam County School District has become the first public district in Florida to have all of its schools be certified in their science, technology, engineering and mathematics curricula. | | | | |
Child care momentum continues with a re-introduced bill for CCDBG | Afterschool programs play a significant role in federal child care funding and in this proposed legislation. Completing the FAFSA is an important step in the college-going process to ensure students receive the aid they are eligible for. LEARNING FROM OTHERS: 'Our Place After School' program helping kids with special needs and their parents | One such program is the ‘Our Place After School Care’ program and it helps kids with special needs learn skills that help them at home and in the public, such as managing money, cooking, cleaning and making crafts, while their parents work. ACRES Coaching: Asking Purposeful Questions
Webinar: Mondays September 9, September 23, October 7 from 1PM-3PM
Questions begin a path toward discovery, imagination, and STEM exploration. How can we help youth expand and clarify their thinking and develop their reasoning through the questions we ask them? This module is a great way to train staff on how to facilitate STEM learning. Experienced educators also love being part of a cohort as a way to connect with other educators across the country, to learn new lesson plans, and to reflect on practice. This is our introductory module and a prerequisite to other opportunities.
