LifeBound Celebrates National Transfer Student Week
This week is National Transfer Student Week, and as the National Institute for the Study of Transfer Students (NISTS) shares, it is "the perfect opportunity to highlight transition struggles and successes" (more at this link). Pre-pandemic in 2019, the National Center for Education Statistics logged in over 1.3 million students as transfers in to an institution (graph linked here), and although COVID has dampened transfer numbers, the population remains significant -- and deserves attention and support targeted to transfer needs.
Coaches can be strong allies for transfer students, helping to unpack assumptions they make about themselves, surface their strengths, and connect them to important resources. When in a coaching meeting with a transfer student, consider asking questions like these:
- What advantages do you have from your prior experience as a college student?
- What strengths of yours have you discovered through your previous college coursework?
- What will you gain from transferring to this institution?
- What is your primary goal pursuing your degree?
- What is your greatest concern or fear about your new institution? Who can help you allay those concerns?
