Life Pieces To Masterpieces
2016 Year End
Multiply your Impact before 2017!

Dear Life Pieces Family,

All of us here at Life Pieces share the strong belief that African American males can experience a positive identity and achieve success in the present and the future. With the loving, secure, and creative environment at Life Pieces, our Apprentices overcome adversity. Your generosity is vital for Life Pieces To Masterpieces as we continue to build a multiplier effect that transforms Washington, D.C.'s Wards 7 & 8.

With your support, Life Pieces impacts over 100 Apprentices who live in Wards 7 & 8 on a weekly basis and throughout the year.  Life Pieces' impact goes beyond the Apprentices and their families and is multiplied throughout Washington, D.C.  As we near the end of 2016 and head into a new year, we hope to count on your continued support.  Because Life Pieces operates 100% on the generosity of friends like you, we need your help to raise the annual operating budget.

The need is great - and Life Pieces is positioned to make a profound impact!

As you read our newsletter, keep in mind that  your support immediately goes to work to:
1)  nurture the creative mind and natural curiosity;
2)  continue the Life Pieces signature artwork;
3)  provide new educational opportunities that reach beyond the classroom;
4)  create a network of educational resources for parents; and
5)  create life-changing experiences.

Your financial support can help multiply that impact in 2017! We hope you will support Life Pieces today!

A Look Inside the Classroom

Life Pieces To Masterpieces had the honor of hosting  Menna Saied, a c hildcare program officer for  Azza Abdelhamid in  Cairo, Egypt, as a Professional Fellow.  During her fellowship this fall, Menna worked with the administrative and programming staff to exchange ideas and curriculum. In Cairo,  Meena coordinates between educational programs and  orphanages and conducts regular reporting on children's  psychological conditions.  She is the founder of the "Education for A ll" project that worked on raising children's skills and education in a poor area in  Egypt. She came to LPTM to find alternative approaches to learning how to facilitate the processes of development, education, and creating opportunities for young people in Egypt.   During Menna's Circle Time celebration, she said that her time with LPTM was one of the best experiences of her life and that she learned a great deal from the Apprentices, Co-Educators, and the staff . Menna is a great addition to Life Pieces To Masterpieces and knows that she will always be a part of the LPTM family.

The Professional Fellows Program (PFP)- North Africa is a two-way citizen exchange program supporting civil society development in Egypt, Tunisia, Algeria and Morocco. This high-profile State Department-sponsored initiative is designed to promote a vibrant civil society and the active participation of citizens and non-governmental organizations in meeting the needs of the people and communities they serve.  During their stay in Washington, D.C., fellows work in organizations where they gain practical experience and perspective on different approaches to the work of NGOs.

Saturday Academy

The 2015-2016 Saturday Academy Program's final presentation was on June 18, 2016. The students presented their personal and professional goals and  aspirations, as well as what they'd learned at Saturday Academy through workshops, the LPTM Human Development System, and mentor relationships. We congratulate the Saturday Academy Apprentices on their professionalism and success!

A four-day venture was attended by eight of our Saturday Academy Apprentices July from  14th-17th. This exciting experience was a special invitation by the University of Maryland Library Center, where the Apprentices experienced college life by attending classes, being assigned homework, sleeping in the dorms, and experiencing college social life.

This 2016-2017 school year, we have a great new cohort of Saturday  Academy Apprentices and are excited for the continued success of the program! Orientation for new Apprentices took place in October, and new sessions have started with sessions around math, science, and black male identity planned! They have worked with the Education Architects and have planned a tour of the National Museum of African American History and Culture.

"Connecting Communities Across The Globe"
Summer 2016

Summer program was a success this year!

Our Apprentices this summer enjoyed learning about South Africa this summer, through fun interactive South African dance, art, rugby, and cultural topics such as food, music, and geography. Students read  J ourney to Jo'burg by Beverly Naidoo,  Long Walk to Freedom by Nelson Mandela, and  No Turning Back by Beverly Naidoo. A total of six South African art pieces were created!

The Apprentices went on field trips to Watkins Park, a bowling alley, Nando's Peri Peri, the movie theater, the African Museum, and also enjoyed two wonderful Field Days.

The Summer Culminating Final Presentation was enjoyed by parents, Apprentices, teachers, visitors, and staff alike! The Apprentices displayed their artwork and performances included spoken word, African skit, a rugby video presentation, African Dance, and a closing with delicious authentic African cuisine.

Join us! We welcome volunteers throughout the year for all programs and invite you to share your creative abilities, expertise, and energy! Contact Loretta Curry at  lcurry@lifepieces.org.

Working Order Records Campaign for CCAG Summer 2017

Technophobia is the electronic duo of Katie Petix and Stephen Petix.  While writing their debut album,  Flicker Out, the duo began to explore an unconventional record label release approach to better align with their personal ideals.  As a result, Technophobia is the first act to partner with Working Order Records.  When asked what charity they would like to partner with for the proceeds of their Working Order Records releases, the pair knew they wanted to work with an organization that promotes artistic expression as a way to positively shape lives.  The duo stated, "Life Pieces To Masterpieces is quite literally the perfect fit."

All of the proceeds from both the  Negative Space single and the  Flicker Out LP sold between May 12, 2016 and October 31, 2016 were donated to LPTM.  Technophobia sold vinyl albums and performed concerts completing a successful campaign that exceeded their initial goal of $3,000 for LPTM's summer program, "Connecting Communities Across the Globe."

Working Order Records is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization working to bridge the gap between musician ideology and social impact.  Created by socially-conscious music lovers, vinyl collectors, and musicians, the Working Order Records operating model aligns with the belief that music is inextricably linked with the potential for positive change.

Courage on Canvas

We all enter life as a blank canvas. With love, creativity, and discipline, each of us
can become a masterpiece. Life Pieces To Masterpiece's unique style of artwork
uses the creative process to enable our young mento express themselves and
change challenges in their lives into possibilities. Courage on Canvas is an annual opportunity to connect with LPTM staff and Apprentices and experience a performance by young men in our program. Our young men are truly our masterpieces here at Life Pieces.

This year's Courage on Canvas 2016 on October 5th at Pepco Edison Gallery Place was a success! We extend a sincere thank you to the Apprentices, board members,
staff, volunteers, supporters, funders and guests who make this event possible.

The night included appetizers and drinks, art viewing, an interactive sewing activity, and an three excellent performances from our Apprentices! We enjoyed the moving poem recited by our Legacy Apprentices.

Learn Your LPTM Lingo!

This month's  LINGO: What are Spiritual Principles?

The Life Pieces Shield of Faith is made of 8 colors. One of these is the color red, which is a favorite of many of our Apprentices! But what does red stand for on the Shield of Faith?

Red stands for "Spiritual Principles". Although Life Pieces to Masterpieces is a non-religious organization and promotes no faiths over others, spiritual principles - as each individual understands them to be - are an integral part of the Shield of Faith.

We might think of spiritual principles as a connection to something higher than yourself - a connection that influences how you treat both others and yourself. That "something higher" is, for some, God, gods, or other deities. For others, it represents their personal values - the principles by which they live their lives.

Among our Apprentices, there is a wide range of Spiritual Principles and how they personally practice them. Respecting others' understanding of the spiritual while being assured that their own will be respected is an important part of wearing the Shield of Faith at Life Pieces to Masterpieces.
