Hello! Welcome to the June edition of the "Life Is Better with You Here" newsletter! As we transition from the vibrant blooms of spring to the warm embrace of summer, we're excited to bring you a wealth of information, resources, and inspiration dedicated to enhancing mental health and wellness.

June, a month of sunshine and new beginnings, offers ample opportunities to prioritize self-care and mental well-being. In addition to the event above, here’s what’s in store for this month:

PTSD Awareness Month

PTSD Awareness Month is dedicated to raising awareness about Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, a mental health condition triggered by experiencing or witnessing traumatic events. Throughout June, organizations and individuals highlight the importance of recognizing symptoms, seeking treatment, and supporting those affected. This month emphasizes the mental health challenges faced by PTSD sufferers and encourages open conversations and education to reduce stigma.

Men's Health Month

Men's Health Month focuses on encouraging men to take proactive steps towards better health, including mental well-being. It aims to raise awareness about preventable health issues, promote regular medical checkups, and foster a culture where men feel comfortable discussing their mental health. Emphasizing the link between physical and mental health, this month advocates for a holistic approach to men's health, including managing stress, anxiety, and depression.

World Caring Day

On June 7th, World Caring Day celebrates the act of caring and the profound impact it has on mental health. It encourages individuals to express compassion and kindness, recognizing that these actions can significantly improve the emotional well-being of both the giver and the receiver. By fostering a culture of empathy and support, World Caring Day highlights the importance of human connection in maintaining and enhancing mental health.

Roadmap to Black Mental Health

The Mental Health Coalition released their 2024 "Roadmap to Black Mental Health". This is a fantastic resource to share and includes tons of helpful links.

From The Coalition: "Race is central to identity and lived experience. It touches much more than skin pigment; it plays a role in our societal norms, values, and traditions. Today, because of the historical enslavement of people from Africa, Black people live in every part of the globe. This dissemination of a large group of people with the same origin is referred to as the African/Black Diaspora. While all Black people are unique, this shared history explains why some experiences are common across the Black community. Although everyone experiences mental health, given the notable history and culture of the Black community in the U.S., it is important to acknowledge the specific strengths, methods of healing, and challenges faced by those who are part of it today. This Roadmap will do just that.

Whether you are Black or want to be more aware of the experiences of Black people, read on to learn more about Black mental health."

Episode Description From Podcast Host:

The Ohio Suicide Prevention Foundation is so proud to kick off another year of 'Voices for Suicide Prevention' to break stigmas, break barriers and save lives. We're doing it in grand fashion too with new co-host, Rachel Tilson, OSPF's Director of Development. Rachel has a personal and powerful story to tell, and you'll hear it in this episode. Our guest this month is the Director of Recovery Ohio, Aimee Shadwick, who has a powerful story to share as well. She's been on the front lines of mental health and addiction services advocacy for decades at local, regional and state levels. The director also talks candidly about finding even deeper inspiration for this work from a close family member who experienced addiction. Plus, find out what Ohio is doing to recruit and retain professionals to these fields so when our friends, family members and neighbors are in need, they can get help.
