Alumnae Living Out Mercy's Mission
|
|
Patricia West Marquez '80 and her husband Ramon Marquez were two of 100 Catholics to be recognized by the restorative justice ministry of the Archdiocese of San Francisco at a service appreciation awards dinner in April. These volunteers visit city, county and state prisons, and juvenile justice centers to “read, to pray, to sing, but mostly just to be with prisoners as they struggle with the consequences of their actions, and the uncertainty of human worth.”
Partaking in this particular corporal act of mercy was Ramon and Patricia’s response to the murder of their youngest child, Michael. They wanted to model the open heart he offered others during his life by becoming volunteers with Comunidad San Dimas, a Christian youth detention ministry served by the Archdiocese of San Francisco.

Megan Van Koll '19 has been on the St. Gabriel Church Youth Leadership Team since she was confirmed as a freshman in high school. Her service to the young people of their faith community and to the parish has been admirable. Megan’s desire to help others is a driving force as she worked diligently to help with the success of the Confirmation Retreat weekend, fundraising service projects and mentoring high school students. This summer, Megan volunteered one week in Great Falls, Montana working with St. Vincent de Paul to feed homeless individuals. “What I admire most about Megan is her upbeat attitude. She is confident in herself and her ideas and is also willing to share and participate freely,” said Nancy Becerra, Director of Religious Education.
Megan received the St. Gabriel Church Youth Service Award which is presented to high school seniors who have exemplified a strong dedication to serve in parish catechetical programs and services.

How do you live out Mercy’s mission every day?
What values from Mercy are you bringing to your community? How do you address the critical concerns of the Sisters of Mercy—volunteering in your church community, donating time to the homeless, assisting as a mentor, advocating for the marginalized and disenfranchised?
We want to share your “Mercy” to inspire others to do the same!
Please share your story for
Mercy In Our World by emailing Georgia Wasley '09, Alumnae Development Officer, at
