North Conway Library gets new online catalog: 1) Library closed on Wednesday, May 25
2) Make sure your Library card & contact information is up-to-date!!! Find form below...

North Conway Public Library is switching to a new online card catalog system to make finding, reserving and renewing books easier for library patrons.
The library will be closed Wednesday, May 25, to accomplish the transition - migrating the catalog and training library staff in its use.
"We are all really excited about it," Library Director Andrea Masters said, adding thanks to the library staff and volunteers for their work on the project. "The library could not exist without our wonderful volunteers who assist in everything we do," she said.
Masters shepherded the library catalog's first move to computers about nine years ago, adopting a software, called Athena for the Greek goddess of wisdom. Masters said the new one is necessary to keep up with changing technology.
"Our current cataloging system is hopelessly outdated. The company doesn't support it anymore, and the system has some bugs by now," she said.
Keeping with the Greek theme, the new system is named for the god Apollo, who was, among other things, the Greek god of truth. Apollo is designed specifically for small public libraries and has won Modern Library Awards' Best Product of the Year Award for several years in a row.
For patrons, Masters expects the transition to be easy - if not seamless.
As with any online library catalog, the key feature is a search engine that will allow readers to type in the name of an author or title of a book and find the book. But the new system will have a more forgiving search engine than its predecessor, allowing for more misspellings and still returning good "best guesses" for results.
The new display also includes book covers and more information about individual titles.
Once a patron has logged in, he or she can reserve and renew books and request items through interlibrary loan if the library doesn't have them.
People can also bookmark items and save a list to read later, as well as paying overdue fines and make donations on the secure system.
The biggest difference most people will notice is that the catalog will now be available over the Internet - an improvement requested on a recent patron survey.
"A lot of people asked for an online catalog. The electronic catalog we had was for in-library use only. Now, having it online, people can access it 24/7, from home, anytime day or night, every day of the week," Masters said.
The new catalog will also be linked directly to Overdrive, the downloadable books program that the library participates in. "Therefore it's important for patron cards to be current and up-to-date; otherwise our patrons might not be able to log into Overdrive until they have updated their library registration information with us," adds Masters.
The library had already been considering a new system prior to the survey, but needed to find funding before it could be implemented. The North Conway Public Library does not receive money from the town to operate.
"We look and act like a public library, but we are privately funded. We rely on private donations for all our operating costs," she said.
Grants do help pay for some capital improvements. The majority of the money for the new software, $2,000, came from a grant from the New Hampshire Charitable Foundation. The remaining $1,500 was raised through donations.
As the new system is being put in place, Masters asks patrons to be patient. "We are sorry for any inconvenience and we hope people will bear with us through the transition," she said.

North Conway Library presents:
"A Year Visiting Cuba" with Erik Eisele
Thursday, May 26, 2016 at 7 p.m.
Weather Discovery Center
|
Cuba, that last vestige of the Cold War, sits only 90 miles off American shores. It's a nation caught somewhere between the developing and developed world, a place with universal healthcare and university education but lacking basic goods. A land of socialism, art and old cars, Cuba's story is often told by both its miles and years apart.
But the unfurling of the modern Cuba is complex tale.
The North Conway Public Library invites you to explore the island in all its intricacies in
the fifth and final of the 2016 Thursday Night Program Series:
Erik Eisele, local writer and guide, will take you inside Cuba.
In the wake of President Obama's announcement of renewed relations with Cuba in late 2014, Erik Eisele took a job
leading cultural exchange tours to the island, special U.S. Treasury Department-approved trips allowing Americans to visit the still-embargoed nation. Over 2015 and early 2016 he made six visits to Cuba. He made friends, danced salsa, bought black market cigars, debated politics, heard an alternate version of a shared Cuban-American history and generally explored this country largely closed to American eyes.
On Thursday, May 26, at 7 p.m. at the Weather Discovery Center on Main Street in North Conway Village, he will bring that story to a Mount Washington Valley audience, no reservations necessary. There will be time after the presentation for questions and discussion. The program is free of charge, but donations to the Library are greatly appreciated. Homemade cookies will be served and coffee is generously provided by Frontside Grind of North Conway.
For more information about the program, please call the North Conway Library at 603-356-2961.

Book Group: "Sense of an Ending"
by Julian Barnes
|
North Conway Library's Book Group discusses "Sense of an Ending" by Julian Barnes on June 9.
The North Conway Library's Book Group is reading "The Sense of an Ending" by Julian Barnes and will discuss it on Thursday, June 9 at 10:30 a.m. at the library.
This is an open book discussion group. Everyone is welcome, whether or not you are a library member.
The Library Book Group reads both fiction and nonfiction and meets on the SECOND Thursday of each month at 10:30 a.m. at the library in North Conway Village. This discussion will be the last one before the book group goes on summer hiatus until October.
A novel so compelling that it begs to be read in a single setting, The Sense of an Ending has the psychological and emotional depth and sophistication of Henry James at his best, and is a stunning new chapter in Julian Barnes's oeuvre. It won the prestigious Man Booker Prize in 2011.
This intense novel follows Tony Webster, a middle-aged man, as he contends with a past he never thought much about-until his closest childhood friends return with a vengeance: one of them from the grave, another maddeningly present. Tony thought he left this all behind as he built a life for himself, and his career has provided him with a secure retirement and an amicable relationship with his ex-wife and daughter, who now has a family of her own. But when he is presented with a mysterious legacy, he is forced to revise his estimation of his own nature and place in the world.
Check the library's website at
www.NorthConwayLibrary.com for more information or call the North Conway Library at 603-356-2961 to reserve your copy of "The Sense of an Ending."
Please remember that this is the last meeting before the book group goes on summer hiatus until October 13th.
