Acupressure for Pain
It made my day recently when a client reported his pain going from an 8 to a 0 after acupressure treatment.

July, 2013

Greetings!

Libraries, Dance and Healing are 3 of my favorite things and nothing makes me happier than when they intersect!

I'll be offering Acupressure Mini-Sessions to benefit the Greenfield Public Library on Monday July 15.  In honor of "EveryBody Deserves a Massage Week" July 15-20 I will donate 50% of all first time appointments to the Friends of the Library of your choice.

Everybody knows dancing feels great but it's cool that neuroscience can now explain why it's possible to Dance the Blues Away.   I had a blast dancing to celebrate my mentor the incomparable Shifah Photos from Cairo Cabaret) - lot's of dopamine that night. Watch for new class this fall  "Belly Dance your Way to Wellness". Until then, check out 3 Belly Dance moves for your aching back

In case you need a reminder, summer heat and activity can be exhausting and hard on the body.  Your acupressurist recommends that you drink plenty of water and take some time to lie in a hammock and look at the sky.

Belly Dance your way to a pain free back
If I could teach you just 3 belly dance moves to improve your posture, strengthen abdominal muscles and take the strain off the low back they would be:

1. Pelvic Tilt- Lie on your back with your knees bent. Flatten your back against the floor by tightening your abdominal muscles and bending your pelvis.

2. Hip circles- best done sitting on physio- ball. Move hips in a circle, let your knees and upper body help with momentum then isolate just the hips.

3. Shimmy- standing, bend one knee then straighten and bend the other, go back and forth faster and faster, must be relaxed. Do it while washing dishes. Releases hip joints and connective tissue, strengthens bone.

  Dance the blues away

Sufi Whirling Dervishes and trance dances like the Guedra and Zar from North Africa have long used dance to channel the Divine for blessings and healing.  I've always enjoyed the big production musicals of the 1930's and 40's but hadn't thought of their emotional importance to the morale of the country.  Now neuroscience has discovered that music stimulates the release of dopamine in the part of the brain that responds to rewarding stimuli like food, sex and cocaine. Dancing is fun, free and good for you- so put on some music and dance!
