Hello Christine,
In a Flash... something unexpected can happen
RESET
On Saturday I stayed after classes to work at the studio. I had to make a quick run to Walgreens and left Sosa at the studio. I drove up the hill and right when I got to Holy Angels and was preparing to go through the intersection, a truck, who had pulled out from the parking lot was suddenly directly in front of me!!!
I started saying out loud "Oh no, Oh no, Oh no as I anticipated a crash while simultaneously steering the wheel hard to the right to try to avoid a "T- Bone" hit! Suddenly the airbag was going off leaving smoke and a strong burning scent in the air. Parts of my car went flying as I hit the rear of the truck and then kept going, bumping up over the curb and landing on the grass. With no hesitation at all, I jumped out of the car, adrenaline going, to see if the other people were ok. I was surprised to see them in a ditch on the same side of the road as the Holy Angels entrance.
My wonderful Honda Pilot was totaled. I hurt my arm and hand and later was sore in my upper back from the airbag but that was all. The other 6 passengers exited their vehicle unscathed except one person who was taken to the hospital with a bump on the head (I found out later everything showed fine on the MRI and he came away with a bad headache only.)
I am upset that this happened because I had just paid off my car and spend $800 on new tires. The car, though, is a material thing that can be replaced. The accident could have been much worse, as my sister pointed out. If I froze up, I could have T-boned them and the passengers and myself could have been more severely injured!
My son came and got me and we then picked up Sosa. Thank goodness Sosa was not in the car with me. Today I have been shopping around for cars and will have to move onto the next reality, grateful that all is well. I have to reset to the new reality.
Speaking of Resetting...
I received an email from a fellow yoga teacher, author, and speaker, Bo Forbes, all about the changes that are about to arrive on March 10--- this Sunday. On March 10 people in the U.s. and Canada will turn their clocks ahead one hour. This change is daylight savings time. This Spring transition has a disastrous impact!!---So, I discovered from reading this article/ email.
Here are the disastrous consequences:
- an increase in fatal car crashes
- dramatic rise in workplace injuries
- heart attack and stoke rates increase
- exacerbates mood swings and suicide rates increase
These changes occur only in the spring
In 2020, the American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM) wrote a position paper advocating for the permanent adoption of standard time, which would keep us in tune with our circadian rhythms. (This would mean doing away with daylight saving time.)
Our Sense of (Circadian) Rhythm
Almost all species have internal biological rhythms and with them, a sense of time.
Our bodies have a relationship with time itself.
We have internal circadian (approximately 24-hour) clocks that generate and shape daily cycles in our physiology, emotion, and behavior.
The term “circadian” comes from the word circa, meaning approximate and diem, meaning day--so, “approximate day.” Our 24-hour circadian rhythms are generated by a molecular circadian clock which is present in nearly every cell in the human body.
When we adjust the clock artificially by even an hour, we lose our circadian rhythm balance, which affect health, emotional well-being, and social interaction.
Let’s look at how you can plan in advance to minimize the cellular disturbance of daylight savings.
We’ll also explore ways to bolster three areas impacted by the time change: digestion, mood, and immunity.
How To Prepare In Advance for Daylight Saving Time
- Starting 6-7 evenings before the time change, go to bed 10 minutes earlier each night and wake up 10 minutes earlier each day. This makes the time change less dramatic to your body, mind, ad brain.
- Avoid caffeine until 2 hours after waking and stop caffeine by 10am
- Try 15 minutes time outside- As soon as possible after waking
- Fit in a 15-20 minute restorative practice in the early afternoon
- Lower the lights around the house
- Limit screen time 2 hours before bed
- Begin pre sleep winding down 10 minutes earlier
These two different stories have a similar message: Reset!
We can reset when something unexpected happens like a car crash or our circadian rhythms feeling out of balance from setting the clocks ahead.
Reset every time you experience a disruptive thought or situation. Reset with our Yoga Sutra Practices and meditate for clarity.
